Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Well guys, I have an update. As per my last post I was having issues with thermal shutdown on the Wlkbt, I sent it to Mesa and it turns out that the fan mod that the previous owner did on it was culprit, the silex fan was simply inadequate to cool the unit. As such I'd caution against modding the head. (Your mileage may vary, but I was informed that the mod was a common issue that merits repair)
In other news, I've found the solution to extracting maximum clean volume from the unit...

Is that a 4x12"?

Just if anyone's interested. .. the Walkabout into a Berg NV cab is pure bliss!

I am going to buy a new cab for walkabout. I already have an Aguilar db212 which sounds amazing but my very old Warwick 411pro (made in Germany) said good bye and need replacing it. My first option is a gk neo mainly because it's price/value relation. What should I choose 212 or 410? I play rock/metal/grunge with a fat and vintage tone (gain at around 2 o'clock). Which fit better? Are they loud enough at 8 ohm? I ask this cos where I would buy it the gk neo 410 4 ohms costs around 150€ more than the 8 ohm one and there are no 212 at 4ohm.
Any suggestions?
Please, need help.

Most cabs are going to sound good with a WA. There's lots of different opinions, obviously -- prepare for the onslaught!

I went from a Mesa PH 212 cab to a pair of 1x15 cabs. The magic in this case is the speakers (JBL K140's) and the old school Sunn 2000 style cabs (cut in half, a 2000 was a 2x15 as I recall).
Those cabs give me all the vintage tone I can handle. And lots of volume for what I'm doing.
Check my earlier posts, there's a picture here somewhere, I think...

Maybe I didn't say the most important factor, money. In Europe Mesa cabs cost exactly twice the gk neo 4x10. My main option is gk neo cos they cost 675€ the 410 8ohm one and 645€ the 212 8ohm. My doubts are mainly 212 or 410 neo and if 8ohm are loud enough (410 4ohm costs 799€).
If there are any cab for less than 700€ good enough, I would appreciate your suggestions.

I wasn't suggesting a Mesa cab, I was suggesting scouring the used market for some vintage cabs. If weight isn't a driving concern, there's lots of great cabs for cheap...

This is such a true statement, and not the case with many heads. However, I like the Walkabout through every cab I've played it through. It warms up my GK NEO's, sounds like thunder through my Mesa 115, kills it through the Fender NEO 410, etc. I love that it sounds amazing through a vintage (or more vintage design cab), yet can really add those warm and smooth low mids through more modern and neo cabs.

So true. I had an Marshall 1x15 that I just never got along with. It was really "boomy" no matter how I eq'ed my WA. In the Marshall cab's defense, it was a cheap, pressboard, "starter" cab, I think. I was expecting too much from it. I didn't love an Eden 1x15 I had either, but I was pairing it up with the PH212, and everyone knows that bad things happen when you mix drivers. lol.

My JBL K140's, JBL E140's, and old EV's (I forget the model) sound just killer (as long as you want that warm, vintage thunder). There's lots of talk about how certain cabs handle certain frequencies better, or handle even lower frequencies better (my eyes glaze over, unfortunately). I wish I knew more about the science behind cabs, I know what tones appeal to me, but I can't articulate technically how it is that they work.

I've had absolutely no amp GAS since I got my Walkabout. I've swapped cabs a few times, but I think that's even abated a bit. My next project is to build a couple cabs for the E140's...

Although a Berg cab would be fun to try. Hmmm. And the new Subway cabs. Ugg.
