Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

The "space" in the Scout cabinet for the head is 12-1/8 in. wide by 3-1/2 in. tall by 12-5/16 in. deep.

yeah, it's looking like it's pretty much a custom fit for the head only. Can't find a lightweight bass head that would fit snug like the Walkabout.

I'm thinking I may want to pick up a Walkabout and try it out. I generally like high powered, tight sounding amps but I've never really given the Walkabout a fair chance (i.e. used it on a gig or recorded with it)

One question first, if I want to use the head for recording, would I get all the "tubey goodness" out the DI or do you need to mic a cabinet to get it?

I used the head two weekends back for a recording gig; we ran direct through the DI, admittedly into a high-end studio preamp, but the results were stunning. Depending on the track, I ran either a clean or dirtyish tone, and both came out great. When I get the mastered tracks I'll share em here.

Go figure, no sooner do I take care of my bass GAS and cab GAS, amp GAS hits.

Does Mr. Walkabout have enough power to properly drive an AE410? Or would you keep it for smaller cabs like 1x12's and 2x10's?

Thanks for the help guys.

The Walkabout head with an AE410 is incredible sounding! I own and gigged with that amp/Cab. I never pushed it real hard, so I can't say how loud it will go. But with my R&B Funky Blues band with two guitars, Keys, Sax, drums and bass, it was plenty loud enough and sounded glorious!

I think the reason is worked so well is that the AE410 is very efficient, and it is a 4 Ohm cab. So you get the most out of the Walkabout head. The AE410 is a tight punchy cab with nice upper mids and the walkabout has a nice tubey compression with slightly pillowy/round lows. A wonderful compliment!

Thanks for the help.

Currently my amp of choice is a Shuttle 9.0. I'd like to add something that will complement it's voice. Sounds like a Walkabout might be the way to go.

Thanks again.

Man- get youself a walkabout & don't look back. & while you're at it - if you play some smallish gigs, get youself a 12" scout cab. NO KIDDING !!!

Following my Walkabout saga:
Sent my WA to Mesa for service. 7 days after they received the head it is fixed. There were evil MOSFETS that have been exorcised and the entire power section has been replaced, at no charge. The head will get back to me next week (all this a bit ahead of the promised schedule). I have 2 cabs specifically lined up to try with it: a 4 Ohm Avatar TB153 nEarful and a Schroeder Bad Maternal Fornicator 1515. I am paradoxically delighted to hear that the head WAS broken, so I still have hope it'll be loud enough for my band with one of these cabs.

On a related note, in case the WA doesn't have the headroom, I had a GB SMax 9.2 on order (wanted the footswitch and features) BUT after reading TB thread(s) proclaiming that the Streamliner 900 will enlarge my manhood, bring peace to the Mid East, mitigate the effects of human overpopulation on the planet and and eradicate HIV I changed my order to one of those:rollno:, which arrives today. Big shootout chez moi next week. Can't wait:hyper:, as the only bass head I've had around for several weeks has been my Shuttle 3. The shootout will have to be at band practice, though, since our garage band's next gig isn't until mid-March.
