Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread part Four!

Years ago I bought a two wheel hand truck from Grainger.
It's steel, kinda heavy. The bottom plate also has an extension bar
for bigger cabs, stair gliders & the handle folds in half for storage.
Compact & rugged. Over 20 years of service.

I have to respectfully disagree. While there may be better, I've done countless gigs with the LMII and a Bergantino AE410 and I never fail to get positive comments about my tone. (and I love how it responds and sounds too) Tonight I took my Walkabout and my LMII to a rehearsal with a loud rock-blues band. I love the vibe of the WA and wanted it to be the cats a**. So I gave it a try, but after comparing to my LMII in the band mix, the Walkabout failed to give me the punch. It was just a bit too pillowy, creamy and lacked punch. I did the rest of the dress rehearsal with my LMII and was incredibly pleased.

To the topic, my wish was for tubey goodness in this Blues-rock based group. (A Garry Moore type electric searing blues band), The LMII had tons more punch than the Walkabout but lacks the sweet tube presence. So something like a Genz-Benz Streamliner 900 still holds tons of promise and my interest for me. I still LOVE My Walkabout. Tone like nothing I've ever heard. Just doesn't have the power amp punch that I wish for.

Hey GRoberts...If you love that cool Walkabout tone but need more power -you might want to consider the Mesa Titan V12 if you can find one :hiding:...I hear that Mesa is discontinuing them. This 4-tube amp can seriously do sweet Walkabout tone, as well as some other amazing tones I'm still discovering...and you'll not find a louder, more versitile 1200 watt amp @ 4 0hms IMHO(I also have my great WA for smaller gigs and practices)....Peace...DAcat :hiding:

Thanks! Not sure my back will make peace with a Titan V12. Isn't that a rather large, heavy amp? I've been getting smaller with bigger performance in the past couple years. I.e. Downsized from a Bergantino HT322 (95lbs) to Bergantino AE410 (60 lbs), Ashdown ABM500 EVO down to a Markbass LMII ...and of course I've had the Walkabout Scout for years too as my uber cool small gig combo.

The Orange Terror is mighty big power in a compact package.

Thanks Chef. I just played through a Mesa M6 Carbine for the first time last night. Did not compare to my Walkabout since it was elsewhere, but I know the sound and response of my WA very well.

The M6 is clearly a different, more responsive, fast sounding amp. But in short, it blew me away. Granted, it doesn't have the chewy, compressed tubey sound of the WA, but damn ...the M6 blew my mind. ...and it blew my LMII out of the water. Things that make you go hmmmm.

Yes...I was down sizing too until I heard the Titan...the Titan would weigh more than your LMII...it weighs just about 30 LBs on my scale at home(out of gator rack case)...but it weighs only "about 1/2" of what your Berge AE410 weighs, and what a tonal marriage that would be with your cab...and you never have to worry much about pulling it off your amp cause its a 30 lb anchor...but if you want lighter with more power, the mPulse 600 has tone close to the Walkabout...the Carbine 600 & 900 are also great amps that are lighter and although ss and have a different tonal flavor than the WA and the Titan...They both sound really great too IMHO!! Mesa has it covered. Peace...DAcat

Thanks DAcat. I've loved Mesa Bass gear for a long time. I'll have to check out a Titan. I tried an MPulse 600 once at a gig and it was nice, but didn't blow my mind. It had a different signature to its tone versus the Walkabout in my vague recollection. I did not feel that the Mpulse 600 was a more powerful Walkabout. I felt it was a different amp. A good one, but didn't scratch my itch so to speak.

I agree with you technically on the mPulse...its not a WA...although, Mesa says that some of the same Preamp guts are iin both amps...but to me, the mPulse sounds a little more pillowy by itself( which is a nice sound IMO) and also IMO, less punchy in the live setting mix with the band...you just can't hear the individual notes as clearly. Though one day I was able to get one to sound awfully close to a WA with a 212 cab...and yes ;)...it was more powerful than my WA . The important thing :D is that there are many fine amps out there and hopefully you can find one that really makes you happy with the tone you're searching for...Peace...DAcat

Don't know if you ever used the WA with either of the Bergs but I am curious as to how they compare,
I have an HT322 (love it / too heavy) and have considered an AE410 as well as an Eppi UL410; don't think there is a local dealer that has either to try though.
Can you compare the 2 Bergs?

Hey, are we going into part Five of this thread yet???? I just went over the first two parts in detail and brushed over the second two. So much information. Thanks to all the posters. What an amazing resource for WA owners.

Like most new posters in these threads, I'm a potential new owner and my research led me here. With a following so devote it's hard to not feel a certain confidence in purchasing a product no matter how fickle ones own bass tone requirements are.

Thanks again for the enthusiastic posts all!

I spent some more time with a WA tonight at one of the local GC's. I'm sold, I really want one. Now I just need to decide on some cabs. I've been thinking about some Berg AE's, then someone posted about using the WA with Aguilar DB 112 cabs. Which got me thinking that two DB 110's stacked vertically, might be sweet.
