Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 5!!!

Will do, Chef. I've only played the stock pups on the '51 Reissue and a Lollar that was in a Nash '52 relic. The stock fender pup really wasn't bad at all, though the Lollar seemed to have something special going on. But they were played on different days, at different places, through different amps...

Running out the door to do some recording using the direct out on my WalkAbout - if anyone could give me a quick answer (I'm not searching, I know - no time!) please -

Is it safe to operate the WA head without speakers connected? (I always forget which is safe, tube or SS!)

I wouldn't use ONLY the walkabout combo in that situation, unless you're talking about a back porch jam or something. Most of the outdoor gigs I play (festivals and college shows) have pretty decent PA support, but even still I prefer a big cab like my sealed 610 for onstage monitoring. Personally I wouldn't even use the single cab scout combo for a club gig, I always use it stacked with the extension cab. It's tuned a bit lower than some other single 12" cabs, but at the end of the day, that's still what it is... and a single tiny cab isn't enough for situations that require volume or serious low end (like a lot of outdoor gigs).

SS is usually safe, it's with tube amps that you usually don't want to do it. I'm pretty sure, though not 100% positive, that it's fine to do with the Walkabout.

It is fine with the Walkabout to run without a cabinet- it is the tube power section in an all tube amp that will blow if you don't have a load attached, not a tube preamp!

If the Lollar single coil P is anything like their standard split-coil P, it should be quite an aggressively awesome pickup!

It's a Low Down Sound custom I had made back in 2009. I wanted something like the Bergantino NV610, with cooler cosmetics and a lower pricetag. Don @ LDS delivered both, for sure. I went with black tolex, chrome corners, and silver/turquoise Fender style grillcloth, tiltback casters and skidrails: total cost was under $700 shipped.

Positives: very well built cab. Gorgeous looking, relatively compact for what it is (not overly deep or wide). Sounds pretty darn good.

Downsides: it's pretty heavy. Not crazy heavy like a Mesa 610 would be, more like 115 lbs. Tonally its a pretty dark cab. I can get where I need to be by boosting treble on my amp, but my Scout cabs in comparison are much brighter even with the tweeters off.

I ran into the guy who persuaded me to buy my WAS the other day. He had complained of the loud fan on his and I had sent him a note about the Silenex replacement fan. It turned out that someone had just told him, "if that fan's too loud for you, you need to turn it up!" So he's happy now.

After well over a year of playing my AV '57 exclusively with my Mesa/Boogie, I plugged my '51 RI into it. Holy guacamole! another sonic treat. That amp has the power to bring out the personality of any bass I plug into it.:hyper:

51P basses just sound good;)
I'm kinda on an MB-Fusion kick right now. Nice as it is, it's no Walkabout, but I like that they're different.
The MB-F is much closer to the M9 than it is to the WA.

More Walkabout-recorded tracks are up online... this is the 2nd of our projected 3 EP's. Someone Who Could Be Loved and When the Breathing Stops were recorded through the DI (Precision and Rickenbacker, respectively). The other two songs were both on my Precision, recorded with the Walkabout combo set at relatively low volume, mic'd with a Bock Audio 251 tube mic. It was more of an experiment our engineer wanted to try than anything else. If you've ever wondered what a $5000 tube condenser mic in the middle of a gigantic warehouse would sound like with your walkabout, take a listen to An Omen or our cover of the Cure's Lovesong. Personally, I prefer the DI tone; the mic'd tracks feel nice and big but didn't have the clarity I like, and both came out kind of boomy. It fits the vibe of the project, but it's not my favorite tone. I think he dirtied up and compressed the bass on Lovesong with a sansamp plugin. Kinda wish I had just played my Ric through the DI, though.

Anyway, I present the second EP for streaming or download, as you please (it's the one labelled Tarp Sessions Volume 2... EDIT: changed it to the direct link)
