Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

You've got input gain about as far as it'll go without going into breakup, and, master doesn't do lots more after about noon....

The Walkabout is a nice 'softener/organ-i-sizer' to the Sadowsky thing.
Very sweet.

Of course, one of the great things about a Sadowsky is their clarity and brilliance.
Which can also be a bit much sometimes;)

The Walkabout does a great job of adding 'some organic' back into that.

A will also often times boost active treble just a bit, and trim VTC 20-40% to get nearly that same thing...

My gig last Saturday night was the first with my Walkabout. My concern was if the amp had enough power for the gig. In the past, I've been using a Mesa M6, Mesa M9 or a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0.

The band is a five piece (electric guitar, keys, horns, drums and four vocalists). We're loud but not stupid loud. I didn't know if after using 900 watt heads, if the 300 watt Walkabout could handle it.

Let me just say, the Walkabout had absolutely no problem with the gig. With the gain at 1:30 and the lows cut a bit, I had the master around noon the whole night. This head rocks!

After using "faster", modern heads (which I still like for certain applications), the Walkabout is a breath of musical fresh air. It just fit in so perfectly with the band.

I think the reason we don't see a more powerful Walkabout is because the magic comes with driving this head. While a high powered head gives you that tight tone because of acres of headroom, the Walkabout gives you that musical tone because of lack of headroom.

I have one other band to try this head with but it looks like it's going to be a keeper.

Nice looking setup there!

I got my replacement speaker today. They shipped me a Deltalite 2512 straight from Eminence. So I guess a 2512 would have worked :)

That fixed it too! So it was a blown speaker. I'm glad that's over with.

I wonder, did you get a better price than what's commonly found on the net for a 2512? I last read replacement 12's could be had from Mesa for $150. That's a pretty cheap price for a 2512.

New Gear Day! I sold my GK/Schroeder rig last week for the express purpose of making the Walkabout more of my main amp. I love my Scout 112 combo but was hoping to find a headcase for the amp or possibly even aquire a second Walkabout to use with larger cabs. I was searching around on CL in some other cities this week and came across a silver face WB in a Mesa headcase along with some Powerhouse cabs. The seller was in a fairly remote location, I called him up and he explained that he was getting no interest whatsoever in this gear as he is an expensive ferry ride from the Vancouver area and was not interested in shipping. I really was only looking for the Walkabout but he made me an offer to buy all three pieces that was so good, I spent almost $200 to go pick them up today (ferry costs are insane) and am still on cloud9 from the luck of finding this deal. I had fun taking my daughter with me as we made an adventure out of the trip and had a blast.

Once I got home I did some cab comparing and the Mesa 210 is a joy to play through. When placed on the floor next to the 410 and then A/B'ing the two cabs, the 210 is almost as loud and noticeably smoother. The two cabs are both rated at 600 watts. I have never seen a 600 watt 210 before but I have to admit, this cab holds its own. The stack together was really something and there is no lack of volume.

I am just over the moon with the Walkabout in the head case. Its not overly heavy and looks pretty spiffy. It came with the manual, hang tags, speaker cables and the 210 cab is literally brand new without a scuff on it. I was planning on working towards a pair of higher end 112 cabs, possibly the Mesa PH112's but am now thinking maybe a second 210 would make one crazy good stack. At 70 pounds, its not a lightweight cab by any means but not as bad to move in and out of the car as I thought. The 410 is a real bear to lift by itself. I am one happy camper!

Thanks guys. The headcase really is a neat. I had a head case for my Big Block but that combo was a little heavy to carry around. The Walkabout in the headcase is really not bad at all to schlep.

Just to double check, this is the Eminence Deltalite II 2512?

Also, from reading through all of this, it's ok to run a 4ohm combo with an 8 ohm extension without any real noticeable difference in sound from the speakers? e.g. the 4 ohm won't sound louder than the 8 ohm. I'm looking to get an extension speaker for the WA.

I love the Walkabout head and use it with Aggie GS112's but also play double bass through the combo. I get a little tired of swapping the head out and am hoping the WA 12 combo and 12 extension will give me something like the WA + Aggies does.

The stack will work but there will be a difference between the 2 cabs. The 4 and 8 Ohm boxes have the same MAX volume, but until that point they will differ, and beyond it 1 of them will start to compress. You can probably max them both with the WA. This applies to the 12s.
