Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

That's right. Even in N. Am their prices are fixed and the only lower rates are on the used market. The nice thing here is that the 5 yr warranty is tranferrable, making used stuff more attractive.

The WA IS a beauty, if a(darn powerful) 300w-500w @ 2 ohms-is enough. Fantastic amp!
You'd void any warranty of course-if they can be switched to 240v.
Also, again-afaik- , Mesa have a set price even for US sales. I don't think you get a SRP price, & a street price in Mesa land.

...
A question, what is the street price of the Walkabout Head in the US?

As it was mentioned, US prices for new Mesa gear are fixed...a google search shows that a new Walkabout head (with the gig bag) is $1099.00US, a Walkabout head in a headcase is $1299.00US, a 1x12 Scout combo is $1449.00US and a 1x15 Scout combo is $1549.00US.

There is no voltage selection switch for the mains. A US spec Walkabout is rated for a 120 Vac, 60 Hz supply.

Is that a 21 and 410 together? Looks sweet! I had a very long jam day yesterday with some buddies and brought my new Walkabout head, M9 Carbine and my PH412 cab. The M9 is of course, insanely powerful and sounded very very good in all regards. After a few hours we plugged in the Walkabout and we all could not stop smiling!

Using a fretless, the Walkabout was a growling, snarling monster of an amp and everyone thought it had more personality then the Carbine. The Walkabout was set dead flat, with the gain and master controls at noon powering the 4 ohm 412 cab. There wasn't much more volume on tap and she certainly wasn't "clean" but the tone was fantastic! Made me think I really don't need the Carbine as this is the loudest environment I would ever be playing in.

I did appreciate what the Carbine brings to the table when switching back to it as there is a lot more deep lows, punch and clean authority to the tone, but at the end of the day, the Walkabout powers a big cab with no issues and even mounted in the Mesa headcase, its an easy one handed carry, looks fantastic and provides a tone that no other amp I have ever used comes close to. All in all it was a lot of fun and will pretty much be my number one amp in the forseeable future!

That's one way to put it. I say the Walkabout is just more musical than other heads.

I have had an M9 and an M6, both of which are gone due the the Walkabout. Last week I proved to myself that my Walkabout could handle my loudest gigs so now I have two micro heads on the way out.

The Walkabout is my number one!

went to a jam with Crabby last night-a very loud power trio type set-up. he brings his carbine m9 and his walkabout head and alternates them both thru a powerhouse 4 12. IMO the walkabout (with my basses), sounded better and we ended up using the WA for most of the night. even volume wise it managed to keep up. i already own the 12 scout but have never been able to run it in a loud situation or thru an external cab. again i was floored by the tone.

Yes, even at a mere 300 watts, through a big cab, the WA is a pure tone monster. I do use an M3 Carbine with my keyboard synths, since they require a cleaner output, and I love the Carbine for what it does, ...BUT, for bass guitar, there is nothing better than the WA.

The head here is $2600 rep. By comparison I can get a GK mb fusion for $1200.

With the Mesa I could literally buy a return ticket to the US plus the Walkabout at US price and still be cheaper than buying the Walkabout alone in Oz....if not for power supply. Damn.

Hey Man, its actually a 210 and a 115 Powerhouse(s). I just set it up quickly today and the WA sounds fab. Totally different in many ways to the sound through my WA Scout 15. Nice to have the extra headroom n the speakers and to push more air. Can't wait for my next rehearsal to hear with the full band. Nice to have the option of my Scout cab too.

Walkabout vs M6/9:
Really, they're just so different it's worth it to have both, if your finances can tolerate it.
On the one hand, they're so different it's nearly surprising that someone would like both.
On the other hand, they're both really good variations of awesome.

And yeah: Walkabout with 412's is pretty heady stuff.

Here in Italy only the head is about 1350€ (1860$) and combo 1800€ (2480$)... :(
I paid my walkabout 112 combo ex-demo 1300€ (1790$) :hyper: ;)

Thanks.

The Pro Audio crowd also seem to have higher prices for other gear. EG Ampeg SVT3 Pro is $1,499 here at Allans vs $2,199 at Pro Audio. I don't know their cost structures or the specifics of what it takes to import Mesa, but other brands don't seem to have this trouble, and I can't see any justification for the markups that appear to be going on.

Faced with a choice of:

  • $1,199 for GK MB Fusion (500W)
  • $1,575 for GK Fusion 550 (500W)
  • $1,499 for Ampeg SVT3Pro (450W, with some owners saying it is underpowered).
  • $2,599 for Mesa Walkabout (300W).

Is there anyone can suggest a reason why the Mesa might be worth that sort of premium?

To be fair, if I go up in the Ampeg range, the SVT CL Heritage is $3,599 but that's all tube, US assembled. (Mesa's Titan V12 is listed at $3,995, which is probably a fairer comparison to the SVT Heritage).

I don't pretend to understand how gear prices can be so different in different countries but its insane what Canadians have to pay for Markbass gear compared to the US prices. I spoke to the Canadian distributor at one point last year who explained that the cost of bringing Italian made gear to Canada is totally different then the US which can only be attributed to Canadian import duties.

Luckily most US made gear is only marginally more expensive these days whereas 5 or 6 years ago, it was a dramatic difference in Canadian and US prices.

I love my Walkabout, but on paper, for the features, power and weight, it's a terrible deal......unless you love the sound of it, which can only be known with an adequate test drive. A lot of what you are paying for is USA manufacturing (unlike all the other heads you listed). If you have never heard one, I'd be the last to suggest you pay the premium compared to the others because there's a chance you will not prefer the WA sound to the others, in which case you'll have wasted money.

Thanks.

How would a WA pair up with a fEARful 12126/1? Would it be loud enough to gig without PA support (playing mostly country). I just got the cabinet about a month ago from Robby at Art of Noise and am struggling with what head I should get for it. Maybe an M6 would be better? Maybe a STL 600 or 900? Really not sure which way I should go. Don't want anything too heavy.

For most people, I'd say the WA would be plenty on a 1212/6/1, but only you know your volume needs.
