Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

The 4 ohm 212 cab is most likely made with two 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. ....

However, Sean's original question was about his situation with a 8 ohm Scout 1x12 extension cabinet and an internal 4 ohm speaker in his Scout combo.

Assuming that the speakers of are similar sensitivity, the internal cabinet will be slightly louder (since it's theoretically getting twice as much power), but it's unlikely that you'd hear the difference if you're standing in front of them.

Sean, I'd recommend that you run what you have and see how it works out before dropping any cash on a new speaker.

Who said anything about me having a 212? I have:

Some ppl like to make assumptions... And that certainly includes myself

With that said, my advice is no, you shouldn't just replace the woofer with different impedance. Because both cab has a hi-range (tweeter), so would most likely also has a crossover. Switching out a woofer to another impedance changes how the crossover responses.

LOL! My apologies... I got totally lost in what was the original question and the quote you used that referenced the 212.

You are correct of coarse, the 4 ohm driver will be louder and hit it's max excursion before the extension 8 ohm. If I were in your shoes I'd get a new 8 ohm driver or if money is tight you can look for a used 4 ohm as they pop up cheap here on TB from time to time. People are always switching their combos to 8 ohm and unloading the old drivers cheap.

Running a 4 and 8 Ohm Scout 12 will "work", but the 4 Ohm driver will reach it's excursion limit before the 8 Ohm driver, since the 4 will receive 2/3 of the power output. If you are cranking, one driver will be at risk of blowing way before the other. Also, according to Mesa (and my own experience) swapping an 8 Ohm driver into a 4 Ohm Scout cab is fine. I seriously doubt that Mesa even has a different xover for 8 Ohm cabs that are custom ordered (although that's purely an assumption on my part). Lastly, the 12" er will not get louder beyond about 150 watts, so running a pair of 8 Ohm 12s makes more sense than a pair of 4 Ohm 12s. The 15's can handle a lot more power and that's a whole 'nuther story.

I did a search on the Walkabout head to find out if anyone has chroncled (is this a word?) the different versions of the head. When you search using Walkabout or Mesa Walkabout you get about a 1000 threads.

I've seen silver and black faceplates. Faceplates that have red on them and black on them. Some that have a switch and some that have two inputs.

If someone can point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated.

I believe our very own Chef did just that not too long ago. I don't have a link for it though.

The earliest ones were silver with red, the second group were silver with black, and the 3rd (current) group are all black. At some point during the silver w/black run they replaced the seperate active input with an active/passive switch and also added an FX Bypass switch. There was also apparently a short period during the silver w/black era where the frequency spread for the para EQ sections was different- this was discussed recently in this thread. Both of the WAs I've owned were from that era, so I can't speak to any noticeable difference.
The oldest WAs are fine, but if you come across one without the switch upgrades it is worth having them updated as they were put in to fix a problem that tends to develop with unused jacks becoming oxidized and causing intermittent cutouts (cutting out sound to the whole amp even if you aren't using that particular jack).

2 questions for you all.

Have any of you happy WA players ever run Bag End cabs with your amp. If so, how did it work out. In the past I have had a number of 2nd cabs (Aguilar GS112NT, Accugroove Tri115, Mesa Powerhouse 2x12) to go with my 2nd gen silver/black faced 4ohm WA 12 combo, but I sold them along the way.

Now I am considering using some Bag End cabs and am looking for any hands on experiences from this dedicated group of WA users. I am thinking of S12's, S15's and S15X. I am thinking of either a single BE cab to go underneath the WA combo, or 2 BE cabs with the WA amp on top.

I am undecided on going Birch or the Deep Red cabs, but aesthetics is a secondary decision at the moment.

Q2.

Do any of you put signal processors in front of your WA. I am mostly interested to hear about experience with non-FX type stuff like additional preamps, EQ's etc, rather than distortion/OD or muti-fx pedals and such. The tone shaping section of the WA seems to be so strong that I don't imagine that you would get much benefit from doing this, but I am considering an effort to reconsider my current tone and am looking for guidance and experience.

Thanks

I have used a few outboard preamps in front of my WA- a Sadowsky, an Aguilar, and my Tronographic Rusty Box- and I think it takes pretty well to the character of whatever you plug into it. It definitely still acts like a Walkabout dynamicly, but it doesn't completely over-ride the different sonic footprints you put into it the way some amps can. Whether or not I coulda just dialed in similar tones using just the EQ of the Walkabout I'm not totally sure. The amp will definitely act differently with an active pre in front of it vs. a passive bass though, which I have learned to love (all my basses are passive). I like my general settings on the amp well enough with all my basses that I don't usually fiddle with them much so outboard pres work well for me to add different character at times (these days I'll use the Sadowsky for really fat but clear tones and the Tronographic for really aggressive tones, with or without overdriving the pedal).

This passed Mrs. Lomo's "pretty enough to sit permanently in the living room" test. I don't need anything else under my tree this year:p. Note the updated back panel. It's an 8 Ohm, wine croc/tan/wicker Mesa CS beauty.

So did this come this way from Mesa? Is this how they're going to be making all of them now or was the added vents custom ordered this way along with the colors?

I assume the back panel vents are now standard. I did not specify anything other than the 8 Ohm impedance and finish options. It also sounds like it has more clean headroom than my other blackface head. Not sure if this has to be related to the tubes or if there might be other inner differences. Right now I am too lazy to pop both coversd and start messing around to find out. Maybe in 2012.

Gorgeous!

I will gladly take it off your hands when you sell it.:hiding::D
