Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

Glancing at their website, quickly, I didn't see a list of authorized service centers, but you might try and find the one closest to you.

I found the list on their site earlier today. There are a few around here., so that's good. I'll start with calling Boogie and see what they suggest. If they think it's the speaker and will send me a replacement that would be terrific.

They list the 4ohm Scout Neo @ $119 on their site too, so that's not bad. I just don't want to throw money at it and not fix it...just in case it's something else or a combination of things. Besides, if the warranty covers it that's $120 in my pocket.

All right, the WA tube rollers - what tubes are good for making WA tighter and quicker-if possible, I have EHX and Sovtek there now. Thanks.

NOS Telefunken, or NOS JAN RCA or Philips, if you can find them. If not, a new JJ ECC83 might do the trick. I haven't tried one in my WalkAbout yet, but the newer Tung-Sol 12AX7's are pretty tight.

Imo, best to go for an 8 ohm, as the single 12"driver can't handle more than about 160w anyway & it lets u add cabs a li'l easier. Ymmv of course

That's certainly something to think about. I was planning on using the combo without an extension cab, and if I needed something louder to bring my other rig...

However, I was planning to tr it out in a few situations to see if the single 12 was going to cut it. If it didn't I figured I'd purchase the 8 ohm driver and go from there. Now I don't have the option of trying it out in a few situations. It's going to be used for small/med bar gigs with standard band. Everybody is pretty good about levels so far, so I don't think I need crazy amounts of volume. However, that all remains to be tested (it's a new band) and we plan on adding a 2nd guitarist.

On another note, the seller got back to me and offered to refund everything if I want. I got it for a great price, so I'm kinda torn. On one hand I don't want to deal with fixing it, but on the other hand I won't be able to get another for this price unless I really look hard...

Just to remove other variables, have you tried the head through another cab yet? When I first got mine I was having all sorts of horrible "farting" issues, after trying all sorts of stuff I realized it was actually a setup issue on my Rickenbacker: the strings were hitting the pole pieces on the neck pickup, sending a crazy hot jolt of signal and juicing the preamp, and causing farts from hell. Through my previous rig (ashdown into sealed 610) the setup issue wasn't really audible for some reason, as strange as that sounds.

Doesn't sound like your issue is anything like mine, but it's always good to remove all possible variables. In my case, my bandmates were all convinced it was the sound of a speaker maxing out... I'm glad they were wrong!

Also, changing gears here: I've really been digging the Walkabout head in a different way lately... pulled the head out of the combo and I've been really impressed how this thing sounds through other cabs... particularly BIGGER cabs. Paired up with my sealed 610 I'm getting into "SVT from hell" territory... I always set the amp grindy, but running through a traditional big rock cab, I'm getting some gigantic rock tones and loving the hell out of this thing in a new way. My precision has also edged out my Rickenbacker for live use... recent comments at my live gigs have mentioned "awesomely gnarly bass tone" or "crazy bass sounds". The mids on this thing are truly magical.

I haven't had the chance to directly A/B them, but there's an SVT-VR at my current rehearsal studio, and I definitely prefer the tone of the WA thru the 610 to the SVT thru an 810. The power feels comparable, but you have to really juice the VR to get it sounding good. Best thing is that you could theoretically run TWO 810's off the Walkabout and get all 550 watts... some day I'll bring all my arena rock dreams to fruition.

If I were you-and I'm not!- and it still had warranty left, I'd pursue that before quitting the deal

That's my plan! It's just disheartening to get something new and be let down.

I was able to use it today into a pair of GS112's and it sounded great! The guys all complemented how great the whole rig sounded. So I definitely think it's isolated to the cab.

It's funny you mention that because as a matter of fact, the "farting" sound I've been hearing sounds exactly like strings hitting the polepieces, but they are not. If they are, this is the only rig that I've played through that makes it audible, and that includes straight DI into recording gear on many occasions.

It's actually what I thought the issue was at first. I didn't hear anything bad come out of the Aggies, so I think I'm ruling that out.

I definitely dig the tone of the head though!
Sadowsky PJ5>WA>Pair of GS112's=AWESOMENESS!

I had something similar going on with my Walkabout cab. Lower frequencies were causing the speaker to sputter. I removed the grill, removed the speaker, and found that the wire on one of the terminals was loose. I tightened it up and it's been good ever since.

A mis-routed wire could be bouncing off the cone at higher volumes as well.

None of the wires inside the cab seem to be touching at all, and all of the connections are solid. It's all at a bedroom volume too...gain is at 9:00 master is at 8:30...

----------------------------------

Okay...so now I'm looking into replacing the speaker. Mesa only covers speaker for 3 years, so that means I buy one out of pocket. I have a couple of ideas/options...

1. Buy direct from Mesa. 4 ohm or 8 ohm. $120.
2. Buy a EM Delta Lite 2512 II. I can get a pair of 12's in 8 ohm for a great price. I've thought about swapping them into my GS112's anyways, but if one would work great in the Scout cab I'd be all for that as well.
3. Use my Aggie GS112 speaker from option 2 if I swap them out with the DL.

So obviously option 1 is probably the best, since the cab was designed for that speaker...or the other way around. I don't know anything about matching speakers & cabs, and since Mesa won't disclose any specs on the stock speaker it's kinda hard to figure anything out anyways. Based on the porting and volume of the Scout cab, does anybody know if the Delta Lite will work well? Does anybody have real experience with it?

IMO unless you KNOW another speaker will work in that enclosure, winging it is a mistake. Go with the factory spec IMHO.

I'd go stock. The radiator cab is a unique thing, and dropping something else in is more of a crap shoot than usual, as it were...

Word. Stock it is.

I'll be swapping my GS112 speaker into it tonight for a test, just to be positive that it is in fact the speaker that is busted.

If not, I'm onto the radiator, horn, or wiring. When I was one the phone with Mesa, the tech looked up prices. The radiator is just about as much as a replacement speaker!

The radiator makes no real noise, it's a tuning device.
I'd be pretty surprised if that was your culprit.

Me too. I can't imagine it being the horn either...or wiring for that matter.

When I was poking around int he cab I did see one that one of the radiator bolts was loose. I thought that might have been a possibility, so I tightened it up and plugged everything back in. It wasn't it...

i'm certain this isn't a new question, but i've had a hard time finding info:
anyone pair up the Scout cab with an M6 Carbine head?

i'm just coming back from a major injury, and moving gear is an issue. i have the strength to move the M6 head that i have, but my ability to handle the PH212 cab i have is gone. been eying the Scout as an option, but not sure how the pairing will work out, or if i ought just sell my gear off for funds to go Walkabout Scout. i have no issues with my tone. i'm currently running a Warwick Thumb BO5, and just started working with an industrial dark/dance band with two guitars and backing tracks for synth and drums. thoughts?
