Murph, maybe this will help you:
My current setup is usually either a Mike Lull PJ4 or V4 (both passive) into various effects including a Bass VT, into the M6 which is then sent into either 1, 2 or 3 1x12's (mine is a Berg HT/EX/EX config). With all 3 hooked up it's running at 2.67 ohms, and I honestly have not run into a situation where I've needed all 3 unless I wanted to just be obnoxiously loud. And I currently play in a pretty loud rock band and more often than not don't have my own PA support in the bars we play. When i do have PA support, 2 cabs is still more than enough most of the time, barely ever cracking it past 9 o'clock on the master with the gain @ noon. FWIW, my tone controls on the head rarely stray very far from straight up. Even in practice, one cab gets it done pretty easily.
Hope this helps.
