Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

I checked out an Epifani UL212 last night and have to say I was duly impressed. Runing my beloved Lull V5, it was a bit warmer on the bottom end vs. the Mesa cab. That helped me a lot. It also didn't take a lot to get that SOB to deafening levels. The other nice part that the cab was still still quite quick and turning the M6 to one of the mid-scoop settings yielded a nice slap tone. Best yet, the cab was on clearance, so I saved a couple hundred dollars. It now resides in my basement.

I just got a M6 Carbine and put it in a vintage headcase from SevenOrchids (thanks, bro!), and I have not been so ecstatic about a piece of gear in a long time. It looks so stately in the Mesa headcase - a great improvement over the ubiquitous SKB case or road case.

It looks and sounds awesome with my two current cabs, an Epifani UL-410 Series 1, and a Fender Bassman 115 modified with additional bracing, insulation, a JBL M151 and JBL badge.

I definitely want to get a used Vintage Powerhouse 212 and/or 215, though...

Walt, I put mine in a ProTec 3-space rack bag since it was getting drug out to practice twice a week with my last band. Chef had suggested the 3-space bag and it worked out real well for my needs. But it doesn't look as purty as the Mesa case.

To me, those options are well spent for.

The M6 has big low end, and the graphic eq and compressor really help tame that at points.
The M6 voicings are nice enough, but fairly distinct. The GEQ lets you modify them more readily.
Lastly, if you have a trouble point with some bass/room/cab, it lets you find it and kill it.

To me, the M6 was already more power than I use, so, the move from M9 to M6 wasn't really about that, for me.

Weighing things up a bit more, I already have a graphic eq pedal and I can live without compression. So I guess my biggest question is, is the M6's 320 watts @8ohms loud enough?
These "will it be loud enough" questions always kinda' leave me scratching my head... :)

Not to sound flip, but this is a question only you can answer. Depends ENTIRELY on how loud your band is, AND what kind of cabinet you'll be using, AND what kind of places you'll play, AND your playing style, AND your preferences for how easily/clearly you need to hear yourself in the mix.

However, I can tell you this, as long as you're talking a decent speaker compliment (radiating area rules the world when you're talking "loudness")... NOT like a 110 cab... this amp puts out enough power that I'd think for most average club players, it'd be enough pretty easily.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: DANGITT, Chef (sorta') beat me to the puch. ARGH! :)

Only you can answer that, really.
I always ran it at 4 or 2 ohms, and had nothing but surplus power.
Don't forget the cab type!!!

For example, a 2 ohm (if it existed) or maybe even 4 ohm 110 would probably not be enough! Or if it was, he probably wouldn't be asking the question because he'd be using a small combo amp already and happy with it. :)

There's a big picture here when you're talking "loudness"... you have to remember to include all the components. :)

I completely understand that I need to take all these things into consideration. I had been using a Big Block 750 @8ohms through a custom built 115 with an Eminence speaker until I sold the BB750 recently as I wanted to get a new amp anyway. The band I used this amp in is a rock band, and I found the BB750 wasn't loud enough at 8ohms so that's why I'm a bit concerned as the M6 pushes out a similar amount of watts at that rating. Of course I could always get a 4 ohm cab down the line or a 2nd 8ohm cab to add to my 115 and that would solve everything. But I'm just exploring my current options.

The overall volume level between an 8 ohm version and a 4 ohm version of the same cab will NOT be that significant in perceivable "loudness". If you want to get "louder", get more radiating area. Add a cab. In fact, if you loved the BB750 and literally got rid of it just 'cause you wanted more volume, I think you made a mistake. If you didn't like the sound as much, that's one thing, but the volume problem is served best, by far, by adding speakers.

No I didn't get rid of the BB750 due to the volume, I was just merely pointing out my concerns about how loud(or not so loud) it was at 8ohms. I could just never find my sound with it. Great amp, just not for me I guess. I'll definitely be looking into adding more speakers but I still need to find my new amp and the M6 is definitely on the list :)

Ahhh, ok, that's good. Well, I can also tell you this.. I have yet to read a post from someone who wasn't impressed by it's output levels. :)
