Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

I just tried the M9 through an Ampeg 410HLF, and was sold on the spot. I've still got the Mesa 4x10, but I'm hopefully selling it to get the Ampeg...the warmth and bass response were phenomenal, and I can't wait to try my M6 with it!

Ironically, the Mesa cab works a treat with the Ampeg SVT, because it tightens them up nicely and remains clearer and punchier...

... well we found these amps (specialy M6) are low voltage sensitive. We have experience just with couple of 230V versions over here...well i see some other TBers has similar problem in US. Time to time they lost bottom end or volume...

+1 with low voltage issue
when lights on stage on, or our drummer turns on the heater in rehearsal room, the sound of my Fathom starts to lose the bottom, is getting muddy and out of dynamics and finally something like horrible midrange(mean freq range)-saw-growl goes out. Slapping with this I felt like the smith instead of bassplayer.
Anybody else with the same or similar experience and better with this problem fixed?

Not sure if the low voltage issue has been addressed, but my brand new M6 (vented case top) hasn't shown any signs of this (yet?). I downgraded from my M9 after I completely stopped using the graphic eq. Miss the compressor a tad and may get a stompbox version. Same great tone and still more power than I ever use. I'm alternating between 2 Scout 12 cabs and an LDS 15-6.

(first TB post) I've read through the entire M6 mega-thread, I do have a question concerning my M6 carbine combo:

-There's a note in the manual stating that if you want to use an extension cab with the 2x12 combo you'd have to send it back to Mesa to get configured for 8ohm use. Since the 2x12 combo is wired for 4ohm, does that I mean I could use another 4ohm extension cab and be ok? If so would I have to daisy-chain them or could I simply plug the second cab into the 2nd out on the rear of the head? (the other output besides the one already connected to the combo speakers)

I'm not very good at figuring out the load/ohm/potential for damage, any input would be appreciated!

note: why would I need an extension cab? well the 2x12 combo is plenty loud on it's own, but when I complete in bigger clubs with 2 guitarists both running full Engle stacks on each side as well as a fully triggered drum set...I need a little more stage volume...not to mention the combo visually appears a little wimpy next to a full stack guitar rig and it'd be nice to have it visually appealing as it is aurally. I sometimes feel as though I'm pushing the 2 twelves in the combo pretty hard..and felt that if I could divide the load amongst two cabs it would feel better...

My first post in this gigantic thread, lol. Believe it or not, I read the whole thing...

Bought my Fathom from TB'er KsPINeSh (hope I spelled that right) and so far I am amazed with this thing! I own a few MB bass heads now, but this is the best so far IMHO. Real easy to tweek a good sound, and I'm not much of a tweeker!

One thing I've noticed, that seems to be the opposite of everyone else's experience. Running the head through my two Scout 12" 4 ohm cabs, I have the bass contol pulled out and at about 2 o'clock. This should sound mega bassy from what I've read, but it seems just right to me and my band. No complaints from them other than volume, lol.

Might this be due to having the ohm switch on the back set at 4 ohms instead of 2? I'll have to check at the next practice.

Yeah, these Mx Carbine heads are a complete departure from pretty much (if not) all the rest of their stuff, and is totally my thing as well, and the EQ is deceptively powerful despite the simplicity of the controls. I love that.

Nope. Unrelated. That's just about the head/cab matchup, your tonal prefs, your fingers, and your bass.

That said, you need to set the switch to the 2 ohm setting anyway if you're running two 4 ohm cabs. Otherwise, you may be risking significant damage.

Awesome - glad you're digging it :) I also ran that one (and run my M9) with the Pull Deep engaged and a slight boost to the bass with no problems, thought I don't think I was pushing 2:00. Maybe your axe is a little light in those lower frequencies and you've found a nice balance.

make sure your two cabs are in phase with each other.

I never thought of that. Um...how do I do this? lol. I remember seeing something about this in a recent thread, just not sure where.

All good points Vic, thanks.

Yeah, totally digging it! I'm thinking about bringing it home between practices and gigs. But I have a Walkabout and a Bass 400 here to play through...

Good point about my bass being light on the lower freq. Very possible.

It's very likely they are, but to verify, take a 9 volt battery, and literally apply its voltage to the + and - contacts of a speaker cable connected to one of the cabs. Note the speaker cone movement just as you do so. It will move one direction and stay there until you remove the voltage.

Do the same on the other cab and make sure the speaker moves the same direction. If not, reverse the wires on the speaker in one of the cabs so they do match and life is good.

Thanks again Vic! That's easy enough.

those of you that have another head besides the carbine, what do you have and what does it do that the carbine wont?

I have an Aguilar DB750. It is a cannonball...in that it has a low end whallop that the M6 lacks. There is just something about that BIG iron transformer. It also has a more tubey tone to it that I love. I am completely attached to my db750 and I would be happy if it were my only amp. But I've been really thrilled with my M6. It's been the only amp that I can play through and not miss my 750 as much;).
