Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread part 3:

I have to say, I've never been a fan of compressors, but I do like the one on the M9, and leave it on, set pretty minimally.
It helps even out the low end, keeping the big notes more or less the same size as the rest of the fingerboard.

...agree....I was compressor free for many many years, than I found compressors secret...I don't use compressor for compession but just for extra boost...also compressor gives me other positives I can hear my self better, EQ and strings are more balanced and tone is thicker...I use Maxon CP-9 Pro+ with my M6 and also with WA, can't live without it ...well I can say I hate compession but I like compressors

Wimpy,

If you don't mind my asking, what do you use for settings with the Maxon CP-9 Pro+ ?

And, where do you place the compressor in the signal chain?

Thanks,
--Joe in San Diego, California, USA

no problem Joe, here is pic of my setting, I never see reduction blinking on my Maxon...I go simple: bass > my ultracompact fx-board :smug: (to loop master) > amp-input...I think it's better if you go directly to the input with dynamics effects, I don't prefere fx-loop for compressor etc....hope it helps

I went to a GC to try out a used Walkabout and decided that I should compare it to an M6 it was no comparison for me. And I come from a lineage of B15N -> V4B -> Eden -> Aguilar db750/db680 plus a bunch of various tube preamps.

Searched this thread and didn't see any comparison to the db750. Other searches indicate that perhaps this amp is similar to the M6 but with more power. Have you guys found these 2 amps to be similar in overall tone and feel?

I don't think so, at all.
I find the DB750 darker, woolier and perhaps having a tad more headroom.

the M6 is clean, clear, fast, and has much more top end extension.

Alan hit the nail on the head. The db750 really has more of the thump factor. It's almost like a cannon ball. :D

But the M6 still really thumps! But they are fairly different. I do love them both. And both do justice to one of Jim Bergantino's NV cabinets.

also:
the DB750 is much bigger physically, and much heavier.

Hence the appeal for the M6...about 20 pounds lighter. And it's much cheaper.

I needed an amp for very loud practices and my LMII just was not cutting it with a pair of Plexis w/four 12 cabinets. The LMII was loud enough but something was just not happening. The times that I drug my db750 to practice the whole band sounded better(?). But I just hated hauling the 750 to two weekly practices. So I was on a hunt for something that gave me a bit more in a cheaper lighter head. That is why I auditioned the Walkabout. And this lead me to the M6 and I've been a happy camper ever since. The M6 with my Sadowsky ash/maple gave a nice growly bottom to the band mix over what I was getting from the LMII.

I have an M6 and just love the head! I have also just picked up two EPI T-310 cabs. Most of the time I'll probably just run one but sometimes I may want to run them both. These cabs are 5.3 Ohm cabs and the M6 will put out 600 W at 2 ohms. My question is whether, if running two I run the risk of underpowering the cabs and also whether the M6 will put out enough to drive these cabs properly. I can tell you that with one cab it just rocks and seems to have plenty of headroom to spare. I'd appreciate any sage adive from fellow TB'ers on this one.....:D

1) you can't "underpower" cabs. I used to use a 50 watt Bassman tube amp with my 1000 watt Schroeder 410. urban myth, that, IMO.

2) it'll drive those two cabs fine.

Also "under powering" can mean that you aren't suppling enough juice to get a cabinet going. Kinda like using a Itouch to power an NV610. But as the guys said, it should be fine as the Epi cabs are fairly efficient.

Just make sure that you change the setting for a 2 ohm load on the amp.

guys---just had my carbine m6 fixed (solder joint was bad and tube was bad - i used it the other night -- and it ran all night, but the sound didnt seem as clear to me before - the notes [esp low ones] seemed more overdriven then clear....... think the new tube would make much dif. if it was a dif. brand?? [which it is] It sounds more like my SVT then powerful and clear... or maybe I am just paranoid now [?]

I think that I had read somewhere that the tube didn't have a big affect on this amp. But I think that it might be worthwhile hunting down a tube like what you originally had in there. If you get a chance could you post what tube was in the amp and what the new tube is, please?

You might try turning your "gain" down a bit more and making up for the volume difference with your master. Just as an experiment.
