Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

I wrote about the problems I had with my first Carbine awhile back- a cutting in and out much like BJazzman was describing. I was able to trace it to a part of the circuit board that would cause the symptoms if I were to lightly push on it while playing- I'm fairly sure it was a trace on the circuit board that would ground out against the chassis with certain vibrations (I noticed certain notes would cause it more than others). I sent mine back to Mesa in California (my problems occured immediately after purchasing the amp), and recieved a brand new one within 3 days of the phone call where I arranged to return the original. I hadn't even shipped mine back yet (on their dime, by the way!)! The new Carbine hasn't had any issues at all, so whatever it was must have been resolved (my original M6 was a very early one that had sat in a store). I've even attempted to recreate the problem on my new one by carefully putting pressure on the circuit board and I can't make it happen.

Stinks that they sent out all these amps with this (or these) problem(s), but at least they fixed them in a relatively quick time. And thank heavens for the awesome warranty service!

Update on my problem..
The replacement fuse holder came a week after I spoke with rich at Mesa, who gets a big thanks for taking care of me..
I replaced the fuse cap only, and so far it has not given me any more problems. been driving the amp at 2ohms too, sounds wicked.
I think I also had the same problem, which would make sense since mine cut out on me when it was nowhere near working hard. They've replaced mine as well. So far so good. :)

Ugh, the simple stupid stuff... always the simple stupid stuff that bites you in the wazoo... :hmm:

yeah, funny thing, it was just the cap, not the housing....
no work required...
although they did send the housing as well just in case.
i imagine the parts were mass produced, and perhaps the spec on a run were not quite right.
all good though, mesa stand behind their product passionately ime, so far.
only bummer was my inability to pry any info from hq about the possibility of a replacement tube amp for the now defunct 400+.

I tried out an M9 yesterday, but only at low volume. The Mid Voicing control seemed quite useful. Built-in compressor is a nice touch. Footswitchable EQ would be useful. Ultimately, it seemed like it would be easy to get a variety of tones from the M9. It also seemed like it could get quite loud.

I know these heads take up 2 rackspaces, but how deep are they? I can't seem to find the measurements online, and I didn't think to measure it while I was at the store...

This head is now on my short list...

Yeah, it is odd that they don't put dimensions on the web or in the user manual. I can't say if the M9 is the same depth, but the M6 is 12" deep. I have mine in an SKB 2 space rack, which I don't think is quite a full depth rack. Seems easy to carry anyway.

If you take into account all the knobs and switches that stick out, figure about 14 inches. It fits very nicely in a Gator soft rack.

And regarding short lists, I had one too until I tried the M9. It annihilated the list. :D

That's good to know. 14" is the same depth as my current head. Using a Gator rack bag currently, but I'll have a rackspace in my new cab.

Good to know. :D

I just wanted to bump it up and say the M6 is a wonderful amp. I've used it in and out of the combo(w/Epi UL310) with fantastic results. The modular form with the Epi is more than enough for small to medium rooms.

I used it last night in a large room for a blues gig and this thing really blew me away. Big, round, and tight with great harmonic content. Excellent definition. Gain at about 2:00, bass cut at 11:00, mids flat, treble cut at 11:00 and voicing filter at #3 position. It really filled the bottom out. The guitar player likes a lot of bass and he had plenty with room to spare! :bassist:

The M9 looks lethal, but the M6 is all I need.

I played Fathom combo about a year ago and I totally hated it. I thought that its tone is lifeless, dry and unmusical. As I'm looking for a new gear I went today to Mesa dealer to give Fathom another try. It was paired with new Hartke Hy-Drive fridge. I must say that I really liked it this time. I particulary dig tha fifth voice - every piece of gear in the whole store was rattling ;) It is a very clean and dynamic sound amp. Nice.

Just curious, what cab(s) were you using the first time you checked it out?

It was Fathom combo (2x12) + Geddy Lee Jazz Bass with probably few years old strings (and this can be a cause of my first impression). Yestarday I played some active Schecter.
Yeah, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. I remember a long time ago I had an old rig with some crappy cabs. I went to update it but couldn't afford the whole deal at once, so I just got the head initially... the rig still sounded fairly crappy. The problem wasn't the head. :)
