Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread

has anyone done an A/B with a Thunderfunk TF550b yet? My TF compressed way to soon in the lowend for one thing.. since the TF is rated at 550 watts and the M6 at 600 watts.. that is very close in power to make a significant difference in my opinion..
but from what i have read so far, the M6 is way under rated, being very loud for 600 watts, and pretty loud while being fast... which to me is a good thing..
I am familiar with the TF sound and volume potential, and i wonder if anyone has tried the two of these amps or have any reference to compare the two.

I have a 550b; haven't played one of the M6's yet...tho from what I've read, I expect it to have a much more modern sound, with a lot more native top end presence.

Man this is meant for Ken or Vic to comment on. Ken still has his TF550 (I believe) and Vic moved his in lieu of the close sounding, power and lighter weight LMII. Inquiring minds want to know.

For my money, at least from recollection of the 550B, the M6 is both more open sounding as well as more powerful.

Hey Kirk.

If the TF550 is 500 watts into 4, then the M6 sounds like 900 watts into 4ohms (and the LMII/F1 sounds like 600 watts, just for comparison).

Thank you.. That is exactly what i needed to know about the M6.
Also, i did try the LM2 a week or so ago and i thought it seemed much louder for what it says it is..
It is a LOUD 500 watts for sure Thanks Ken..

And just to be clear, I still dig the TF550.. GREAT sounding head.. warm, tight and smooth. But volume-wise, and low end wise, and treble response wise, it isn't even in the same league as the M6.

Warm is such a nebulous term. In the loosest sense, I would call all three of these heads 'warm' in that they surely aren't 'hi fi' or sterile.

In the stricter sense of how I use warm, which really resides in the mids (i.e., a smooth mid tone with plenty of low mids and a somewhat polite and organic upper mid response, and also a 'sweet' treble response), I would put the TF550 on top, the LMII next, and the M6 quite a bit below. The M6, while having plenty of fatness down low, is just so aggressive in the upper mids and lower treble, that 'warm' doesn't really come to mind for me as much as grindy, aggressive, and 'in your face'.

As a point of reference, I would call the Walkabout and MPulse600 'warmer' than the TF550 and LMII, since they have all that low mid and mid mid 'tube wool' in their tone... very present in the mid mids, and a sort of bloomy low end that really says 'all tube' if you don't listen too closely.

So:

TF550... warm and tight
LMII.... even, relatively transparent and quick
MPulse600.... warm, big, fat and a little 'loose', 'slow/give'
M6... big low end, aggressive upper mid brightness, 'quick'

So Ken, Just so I can get a reference what would you consider a more Hi-fi sterile amp. I am not looking to open up a can of worms here, I am following exactly what you are saying so far and this is very beneficial. So the BB750 relative to the M6 is going to be a slower response (more give), more mid grind but still mid present like the M6, but still big in the bottom and more low-fi. Man, I have owned a Mpulse 600, a walkabout, and a BB750 and I can say Mesa is making some kick *ss gear.

I would put the EA iAmp500/800 pretty far up the 'uber clean hi fi scale', along with the Markbass SD800, some of the Phil Jones stuff, and the EBSHD650/350 without the 'tube drive' kicked in.

+1 to you comparison of the BB750 versus the M6 (at least where my ears and descriptive terms are).

And yes, Mesa is really doing some cool stuff. That Mesa 610 is the first heavy cab I've played in a LONG time where I actually thought the 'tone was worth the weight'.

This amp is starting to sound more interesting everyday. Only thing someone did mention at 24 pounds and with todays technology that is rather a heavy amp. Now i agree and disagree. Carrying a single 12 at 31 to 45 pounds, 24 pound head does not seem heavy. Even a whappo Jr or a Berg AE410
is 59 to 62 pounds. But, technology being the way it is and everyone looking to go lighter I think next year and the year after we will see alot of good light amps. Mark bass and the Shuttle are just the beginning. We will see 750 and above watts at 4 to 10 pounds. But again this thing is very interesting - m6 - when talking about its tone alone.
