Mesa M6 Carbine Mega Thread

I just bought this Mesa Fathom head. I love the Crunchy Mesa tone, but something doesnt feel right about the balance/ punchyness of the highs mids and lows. My Pbass probably doesnt help the overly low sound, while my Behringer Cab takes it down another knotch. But hey for the money the Big Behr really does rock the room and has above average tone!
Any suggestions on a better rig?

I won't hate on the behringer but you have to upgrade it ASAP. It's like drinking Dom Perignon out of a solo cup!

As for cabs... match mesa with mesa, and I guarantee you'll be a happy camper ;).

I actually find the Fathom/M6 to have much more prominent upper mids and treble versus bass than the other Mesa heads. However, from your picture, if you boost the bass control and scoop the mids with that mid shape control, well, you will probably end up with a very bassy tone:smug:

do you know if it is bad to leave the gain consistently around 2 o'clock? I love the sound the bass makes, but i get so much buzzing! And im worried about the tube...

I don't have that amp (yet) but I think you're fine.
You probably have a grounding issue with your AC wall outlet or 60 cycle hum noice. You may be using a bass with single coil pickups that can cause some buzzing. It's possible you have an amp issue but I doubt it.

When I picked up my second Mesa PH112 at a dealer in Wisconsin, I plugged a "Fathom" into it to see what it was all about. I really liked the head, soundwise I prefer it to the Little Mark, but not enough when considered the weight and the price difference.

That said, when I get to the point where I feel I have the disposable income freed up, I will definitely be considering one.

The WARMTH

I would agree that the AG500 is all about big, warm, fat down low. That's not particularly my thing, but I can see if you have an old school sealed 15 cab like the NV, and dig the dub, that would be a great head. They are a touch too mushy for my tone goals, which is why I was so impressed with the tight, mid present, articulate M6. Quite different voicings there.

Enjoy that rig. That's a big, old school warm fat sounding rig you have there!!!!

Is its best to leave the 3 band eq at 12:00? and then mess with the voice? Could you guys give me some ideas of where you got your M6 dialed in at?

I would start off with the Bass, Mid and Treble at noon, and then try the different voicing options. Voice 2 and 4 are more subtle, and 1 and 5 are more extreme, so I'd start with 2 or 4 (or of course 3, which is the most 'flat'). Then, I'd play with the Midrange control. This is a passive control, and it's really musical. Not that the active Bass and Treble controls are not, but they are more powerful, and you can 'get into trouble' more easily with a more powerful EQ control (IME, at least). If you feel the need to tweak the low end, try the Deep switch before you boost any of the Bass. It's a really cool control. Then, I'd hit the Bass and Treble to fine tune, but start with small changes first.

This is just my approach, and YMMV.

Hope that helps, Tom.

You described exactly what I love and yes I use an NV215

It also sounds like if the M6 Carbine is like a Markbass F1 on steroids then it would also be great with an Epifani UL2-410 -- plenty of low end and benefits from the aggressive mids, plus more wallop, good down to 2 ohms, and just a slight hint of tube. GAS indeed... :hyper:

That's exactly the cab I'm gonna' try it with... :)
