Mesa M9 mega thread

I tend to use pedals that don't rob low end. I've gotten tones I was happy with using the Aguilar AGRO, the Fulltone OCD and the Sansamp RBM and RBI pre's (both available as pedals too, and run together, not separately) into the front end of the amp to add a bit of hair.

I've also dug the E-H Bass Microsynth (set for distortion) and Graphic Fuzz too.

GEQ timming 35hz a bit, pushing 12o hz a bit, and 2khz a bit

comp:
threshold just under 9 oclock, ration at noon

the nets the comp on light flashing on briefly most of the time from D on lower...however, it's not all squishy and false sounding...just evens the spikes.

I like to use the comp mostly as a limiter. I'd set the ratio around 3:00 and the threshold between 8:00 and 9:00. Because I don't push the gain to breakup, I'd set it so the comp acts correctly. Usually between 12:00 and 2:00. Then I'd set the master for my overall sound level.

Tried an M9 last night at a store with a couple different cabs. Tried a Mesa 1x12, 1x15, and 2x12, and a Basson 4x10.

I was really disappointed by the Basson 4x10. Muffled and dark sounding. Might be cool for reggae or dub though, the low end was big.

Of the Mesa cabs I was most taken with the 1x15. Just a great sounding cab. Clear top end, definition, balance, and punch.

Anyone get to try the M9 with an older EV loaded Mesa Diesel 1x15 or 2x15 cab?

I run mine with a ph412. I usually run mine with the switch at the first mid bump, Bass pulled for deep at 1 o'clock, mids at 1 o'clock, treble at 11 o'clock. As far as the EQ I have alot of the lows and low mids bumped up and I cut alot of highs for a dub-by reggae vibe. I almost always use a lefty MM SR5.

Done tons of live stuff always sounded really good, for some reason I like to play with the gain lower then I used on other amps and boost up the volume. Never recorded yet with it but i'm a little nervous about it because it does seem to be a little noisier then most amps I've owned.

Only things I would change is make the the compressor foot switchable, and let the voice settings be foot switchable also. All in all this head is as close to perfect as I've come into contact with.

Wow! I also use PH412 with my M9 and my primary bass is a lefty SR5! Hilarious to find another lefty with the same rig!

I love the 412 cab with the M9 but it sounds incredible with my pair of PH115 cabs or my 4 ohm UL-410 as well. The 410 is by far the most portable but the sonic nirvana that comes from playing the M9 through the 412 is hard to replicate with any other setup.

I tend to be running the M9 on the 3 position (flat) with the graphic eq off, gain at noon, bass at noon, mids at around 2 oclock, treble backed down to about 10 oclock and ususally dont even use the comp.

I am just so impressed with the flat tone of this amp,. Its so punchy and clear sounding.

Seems like lefties like the M9! :)

Crabby, do you think having a second UL410 would compete with the PH412, or would the Mesa still be beefier sounding?

I'm a righty;)

As with the M6, I tend to favor voice 2. When using 2, I roll bass back to about 10am, push mids to about 2pm, and leave treble flat. If the room, cab or bass tend to be too beefy, or result in a little boom, I can trim that back via the 30 and 80hz bands on the graphic.

However;
I have played some with leaving the voice control flat, adding some bass on the 80/150 sliders, adding some treble at the 2/5/8khz sliders (with 5 being highest), and trimming some mids at 600/900...this ends up sounding pretty similar, but with a more controllable deep end.

I use voice 4 with my Spector, but run 3 with my Warwick. Gain ~ 1:30, bass flat w/ pull deep engaged, mids dimed, treble ~ 2 PM. A slightly smoother, slightly "bassier" version of the tone I cop with my GBE 1200. While I prefer the GBE live for a couple of reasons, the M6 is my practice amp and I use both the M6 and M9 in the studio for that slightly fuller sound.

Input: 12 o'clock
Bass: 12 o'clcok
Mids: 10 o'clock
Treble: 9:30ish
Voice: 5

I haven't been using the graphic EQ or the compressor. The rig just kills! It really growls! It is so punchy and articulate that it just cuts through any live mix.....BUTTAH !!!

It's a scientific fact lefty's have the best ear for tone and no fear of amps and cabs that weight more 40lbs combined:hiding:

But as noted our righty brothers, although a select few can, Can do nothing more then to succumb to the awesomeness of the M9.:D
