Mesa M9 mega thread

I have never heard about using the passive switch even when using an active bass. If I knew this before I may have liked some of my other amps better (not better than the M9 thou!).

I mentioned about the M9 hissing with my Pedulla earlier when I am facing the amp. I am playing my 6 string (fret-less) Stambaugh SC right now and it's not hissing when I face it. Hmm - It's gotta be something with the Pedulla - Any ideas??

One more thing - Do you guys put the M9 in mute when turning it on or off , because it makes a fairly loud noise when I shut mine off and I don't want to damage my speakers.

I gotcha.Well I can tell ya it broke up pretty quick-again though we were outside and I was pushing it.Where we were playing though,Im not sure my 410 wouldnt have bottomed out either.Eq settings-I went through several.I didnt have time to play with it the day before when I got it so I was playing it with only limited time to tweak it.But at full gig volume,I put my ear down by the cab at it was distorting.

Ive been spending some more time with it this week.It is clear as a bell and the bottom end sounds wonderful.But in my case Im just not sure the size of the box is worth the volume I get out of it.

I dont use it either.I tried it both ways and liked it better in passive.

Did Leland test it before he shipped it?
Maybe you got a bad LF driver.
An M9 with a Kappalight 15LF in a decent box should be pretty freakin' loud.

I just traded cheezewiz for his M9 and it gets delivered today. I'm looking forward to checking it out and I'll probably take it to my gig tonight. I played through an M6 for a few minutes at a local dealer and I really liked the clean tone it had and the voice control was pretty useful, too. I just read through this mega thread (along with the owner's manual) and I think I'm ready to begin life as an M9 owner. Thanks for all of the great info! :bassist:

Yeah I think so, too. He just had Mesa/Boogie repair it for an issue with a driver transistor and they went ahead and updated it to the latest specs with the cover, fan, etc... Plus, I figure I still have three years left on the warranty so I'm a happy camper. :p

Sounds as though your new private dragon has had all its' shots. Just make sure you're not standing too close to it when it burps, unless your undies are asbestos:D

You ONLY need to set the switch in the 2 ohm minimum position if you go BELOW 4 ohms. Anything above 4 ohms, leave it in the 8/4 position.

It seems there isn't a clear answer as to what would happen if you run a 4 ohm load with the amp switched to the 2 ohm position.

Does the amp then run at a lower power rating?
If there isn't any negative effect, then why don't we simply run the amp at the 2 ohm position all the time?

As I understand how that's implemented, you won't do any damage that way, but you could lose some nice dynamic response. I don't recommend it. That switch is there for a good reason. Use it (but use it wisely). :)
