Mesa resale value dropping?

Has anyone else noticed how the used values of the newest amps seem to be dropping? Is it just that the market is flooded? Or has the transferrable warranty change caused this?

I have no stake in this question as I don’t own any Mesa gear and don’t have any future purchases planned. Just thinking out loud.

Once used, new gear drops substantially in selling price. This is not unique to Mesa or musical gear or anything else.

Honestly? I'm seeing all kinds of hear listed for prices that would have been spot on several month back sitting and not selling.

I think everything is taking a little bit of a hit.


Combine that with @agedhorse constantly coming up with new and exciting gear, some of us Mesa fans want to try the latest and greatest. I finally pulled the trigger on a TT and a Subway 115 recently. As soon as I can get my new handles installed, my custom color Walkabout Scout and extention cab are going up for sale.

Luckily, there seems to be a lot of new people taking up an instrument while they are out of work. They just don’t spend a lot of money on used, and beginner gear.

I’ve been noticing some WD800 selling for lower than I expected. Or at least sitting for long periods for prices I remember seeing them go for in the past. Just thinking maybe the transferrable warranty made it worth a hundred more

Definitely a flooded market! It’s been keeping me from listing stuff for sale since I know it will not go for what it used to.

Betcha with the TT800 amp shipping there are players wanting to trade up. I've seen a lot of D800+ and WD amps used over the last few months but everyone I personally know who has sold or traded a Mesa amp has also picked up a TT.

I don't think so. Mesa gear has incredible value on the used market. M6's and M9's had their issues when new and still go for big bucks. I suspect that the Subway series has been super popular and they have sold a zillion units. 800+ going for $650 considering how many they sold? Seems like the value is there.

I backed away from mesa when they went the ultra lite direction. However, I'm still buying the recto guitar cabs.

I’ve recently sold a few amps and basses both here and on eBay and have gotten fair prices. They did take longer to sell though.
I got killed on a G&L Jazz Bass.. for some reason that brand takes a huge hit in the used market.. that has been my personal experience.

Used is used and it has to be price lowered anytime, new is something different.

Many people lost their jobs due to Covid. That means people selling to pay bills, and not many with disposable income to buy. I just picked up a Carbine M9 for $700. These are regularly listed for $1000 to $1400. But also remeber asking price and selling price are very different.

Definitely a flooded market! It’s been keeping me from listing stuff for sale since I know it will not go for what it used to.

I think that depends on where you list it. I had a few items i listed here and they just sat, no inquiries or offers. I moved those items to ebay with a price bump to cover the fees incurred for using the service and they sold in less than a week, with one selling within a couple hours of it being listed.
IME the size of the potential buyers pool is a major determining factor in what a used item will bring.

It may be seasonal.
October - December: better prices because of the holidays
January: lower prices from people recovering from the holidays
February - April: better prices as players get ready for the new season
May - September: Many players are too busy gigging to shop for "new to them" stuff

In addition, major election years are notorious for slower sales in many industries

Reverb doesn't have a price guide for any of the Subway line, but looking at listings here in the classifieds, it looks like most Sold listings are pretty steady at $550 for the D800, $650 for the D800+ and $800 for the WD800. I know there is individual hurt, but overall, the musical gear market is running strong. Fender sold the most guitars it's ever sold this year. That, of course, does not mean that everyone that plays an instrument is having a great year financially. But I really haven't seen a mass sell-off of gear at fire sale prices that has been predicted.

I am noticing used Mesa amps are selling a little less than they did a year ago. Did the warranty have anything to do with it? I don't think so, I think it is more of a result of the current overall economic situation we are experiencing.

With respect to Mesa I think it’s due to the amount of Subway gear they have sold lately. Add to that the number of different head models that had people buying multiples. The used market is naturally starting to slow on them a bit. Unless you have a TT-800. Until the next release.

I think this is easily explained by the TT-800. To me, the WD-800 would have been my holy grail of amps if I were in a gigging position to use something like that. By the time I could finally justify it, the TT-800 was out. I really don't need anything like that, especially given the situation with the 'rona right now. But if I were in the market for such a beast, I'd have to get a WD significantly cheaper to be swayed to not just go all out with the TT.

One thing that could also be driving some of this generally is the cost of shipping, although not so much for class D heads given how small they are. I shipped an Elf 1x10 cab(16lbs) from Wash DC to Texas and it was just shy of $50. I recently bought a bassman 20 combo amp, and it was shipped from Oklahoma to DC, and it was $128. Besides smaller items, I actually am holding off selling a couple things except locally because of this.
