Based on my brief demo time in the shop with the D800 head, the overdriven preamp sound of this is probably not a desirable feature for most users. I found the clipping harsh and not terribly musical.

Really? My time owning an M6 didn't leave me with an impression that overdrive was something that amp excelled at either; it was very clean all the way up. Perhaps they modified subsequent models, or my pickups weren't high enough output to overdrive the front end.

If so, that's a disappointment, especially considering the core customer base (rock/metal guys). But, if their bottom line isn't hurt, they'll be fine, I guess.

I was originally dreaming for the preamp of my D-180 or a preamp-esque from a Bass 400 in a DI/preamp pedal. That way I could get close to the tones I love without lugging that beast around. I'm hoping this will get me closer and make me pretty darn happy.
