Mesa Walkabout Megathread!

Thanks Charlie...I use a TFB420 for my DB all the time, paired with a schroeder 1210. Sounds like the scout downfiring cab might be part of the issue with DB, but that won't really allpy for me if I just get the head...

Seems like it could be a good doubling head. I'd love to try the Walkabout head with various cabs. I wouldn't mind having a small head for BG jams. I never double anyway though; pretty much all my current gigs are on EUB, and nearly all my jams are on BG. The Scout rips for big sounding EUB though, although I think I do prefer the Schro 1210 for that application.

Arggh! Just got my Walkabout back from service yesterday. Turns out there was a blown fuse and some loose contacts on the fuses. It was great timing seeing as I just got my new Berg yesterday. Got home and hooked it all up, let it warm up for a bit and nothing. Turned it off, tried using different inputs and nothing. Messed with it for a good 10 minutes and nothing. Decided to give it one last try and I cranked the gain all the way up and all of a sudden it was working. I turned the gain back to a reasonable level and it was working allright. I even turned it off and played with it again about 30 minutes later and it was fine.

This morning I decided I wanted to play for a few minutes before I went to work and nothing. My weekend plans have appeared to be foiled. At this point I would jusy assume return it, but am now outside the 30 day period. I think I am going to go out tomorrow and find a decent used head and wait this one out and hopefully it will get fixed right.

That's what my first brown face was doing. I'm about to go and pick it up from the shop. It's the third time I've had it repaired under warranty. :hmm:

I've used the effects loop bypass by running a short cord, but since it's nearing it's 5 year warranty, I thought I'd go ahead and get it fixed...again. But, this time I've had them hard wire bypass the effects loop altogether. I haven't used an effects loop in 18 years, I don't why I'd start now. :D It's annoying that I like the sound of the Walkabout so much--I've found it to be a tempermental little bastard, but I adore the way it sounds.

While that amp is cursed, the one I got in my Scout hasn't caused me any grief. Last night was the first gig I've played where the 12" simply couldn't cut it, though. My normal gig is a restaurant thing where the Scout is perfect. A medium sized blues club with a heavy handed drummer? Not so much. Luckily, the club has an Eden 4x10 sitting on the stage, so I simply unplugged the internal speaker, and used the Eden. On 4, the Walkabout pushed the Eden plenty and the low Bs on my flatwound fitted bongos sounded amazing.

I like the wooly sound I get out of the Scout combo (and, you can't beat the load in ease with the dolly handle). I was planning on selling the Walkabout that came with my scout and use my original head with the Scout cab. I'm thinking I'm a little gun-shy about trusting my original brown face without a backup, though, so I think I'm going to stick with my original plan and spring for an extension cab, instead.

That way, I have expandability in two ways. I can run stereo with each head driving a cab, or I can run a mono stack. I might have mentioned this idea earlier in the thread, but I'm not going back to look for it. :ninja:

As for uprights, I've used my Strunal with my Walkabout through an EA cab, and it sounded great. Never tried it with the Scout since I'm an URB poser, I'm afraid, and I haven't touched the upright in recent months. I can't decide whether to sell it, or give it one last shot. Of course, that's a question for another thread....

Someone posted a while back that they had heard that neo speakers demagnetize after 2 years of use. My Walkabout Scout 12" combo turned 2 today. I turned it on and it works perfectly with no loss of volume or change in sound and I've used it a lot. So, so much for that piece of false data.

A few people state they have had problems with their Walkabouts and I sympathize with them. it's frustrating when you spend a lot of money on something that doesn't work. I've been very fortunate. I've had only one minor problem in 2 years-a dirty control pot that was a 5 minute fix with a shot of contact cleaner. Oh, and if you carry your Scout head in a gig bag, check your fuse holder when you take the head out. I took my head to a gig with a supplied cabinet and got no power. I checked the fuse and the holder and fuse were gone. I found it in the gig bag. They can pop out if bumped.

The Walkabout isn't perfect and won't please every bassist but it suits my needs better than anything I've used previously, and I've played through almost everything over many years. It's powerful, even at 8 ohms, I love the sound, it's easy to transport and it's been reliable. I think it was money well spent.

Nope, I don't mind shaing the info bro:)
This makes it sound like the mesa is not for me, but keeps me curious about the carvin...

Hi Chef, I'm hoping you don't mind me answering your PM here in case it's of use to anyone else.

>>> Used a walkabout head much? compare and contrast to carvin?

I've had the head before and now the 12" Scout. Live work and home shedding with both, no studio. The Carvin can annihilate it in volume and clean tone with a tight physical 'thump' at all volumes. That said, the B1500 in a rack bag weighs almost as much as the entire 12" Scout combo. Might be more fair to compare it to the B500, which I can't do.

The Walkabout has a somewhat ragged midrange which tube swapping can only slightly mitigate to the point I've accepted it just sounds how it sounds. Not a bad thing, but IMO it'd not be ideal for DB or as Passinwind said not for anything smooth anyway. And in my experience that's true regardless of what cab you use. The EQ on it can be pretty radical too, though in the Scout cab I play mine flat (passive mids at about "5" actually which is 50% rolled off from flat).

>>> some DB guys like this head...I'm not sure it's significantly differnt than a tfb, ...

I'd say it's significantly different. A much more alive or wet tone, smaller, I'd say louder or at least it gives the perception of it. I'm surprised to hear that DB guys like it, but then who knows what style they're playing, etc. Definitely an amp worth hearing, and should be widely available so you probably don't even need to fork out funds to check it out.

Revived from page 8, a latecomer...

I actually don't have the cab, just the head. I use mine with GS112's and love it. As far as tubes go, I haven't messed around with it too much, the stock tubes sound so good, when I have tried others I have just came right back. There is an excellent post in the "Walkabout Megathread" that details the results of lots of differnt tubes (Tombowlus I think is the author).

I play southern gospel w/ my 55-02. I know that's a little different from most on this site but it takes all kinds.

I think I read something about this before, but I couldn't find info via search.

Does anyone have info on replacing the front LED?

I'm thinking about doing a matching led fan, but red would look a little more ominous than I'm giong for right now.

Thanks for any help

I believe any standard "jewel" light/cover whatever, like on older Fender amps are what you can use... Fender sells them in diff colors, and I bet you can find all kinds on the web and/or ebay.

Thanks talkbassers. I read this entire thread, walked into the store and walked out with a walkabout scout. I went from the store to rehearsal (psychedelic free jazz, think 70's Miles Davis, Sun Ra). We have horn players, keyboards, percussion, kit..the whole nine yards and the whole band was really digging on the walkabout. I had a grin a mile wide the whole rehearsal. Mucho booty..mucho. I have sitting here next to me turned on..I can hear the fan..but it is quiet. Thanks again.

What are TB'ers experiences with the 1X15 Scout? I have been using a single 15" speaker since I started playing 25 years ago and I am too dumb to change.

Like a lot of folks I haven't got all the way through this thread. However, I've been reading up on the Walkabout and I'm feeling the GAS already. I think a trip to G****r C****r is in order for this weekend...

Your gonna go  and then :D and then you get the price (which is normally non-negotiable because of Mesa's strict pricing policy) and go

But for the record, for me anyways, it was well worth the investment and I've had nothing but great tones from the cab and I opted for the 1-12. The 1-15 was almost too much for what I do! I'm a happy camper with this combo or as I now refer to as "The little monster"

Best of luck to you!

Thought people would be interested in this reply from Mesa Boogie reference the 2ohm question. I know it's been discussed here in the thread but worth posting this nonetheless.

"Thanks for your email. I understand your confusion, so here is the answer.

You can run the Walkabout at 2ohms, and the amp will perform and function just fine. However, when running at 2ohms you need to be concerned about how loud you are running the amp and for how long. If the amp is played for too long at loud volumes (3-4 hours straight) you may run into the amp overheating. The amp is designed to perform most efficiently and at it's peak at 4ohms.

The Walkabout Scout comes stock as a 4ohm unit, and this is designed for folks who are using the unit simply as a combo, however, being that Mesa products are always built custom (unless you find what you are looking for at the dealer) you can choose the option of purchasing a 8ohm version which would allow you to safely run the unit alone or with an extension cab. Running the Walkabout at 2ohms you are still performing at 300watts, with maybe a bit extra headroom.

Thanks"
