Mesa Walkabout Megathread!

As ironic as it is, I recently traded off my Walkabout, but not before putting the original fan back in. If anybody wants all my fan stuff, it can be had pretty cheap.

It was a real tough call, but the other amp will definitely work better for what I need, and I got a good deal.

In truth, this was really pretty unexpected. I've been talking to Dave about these amps for a long time, but just couldn't swing it until now. Just sorta' worked out this time around. However, serendipity if you ask me (see the thread). :)

As much as I loved the Mesa, I finally decided it just would never be my main amp, and since it had to be one or the other...

Arggh! Just got my Walkabout back from service yesterday. Turns out there was a blown fuse and some loose contacts on the fuses. It was great timing seeing as I just got my new Berg yesterday. Got home and hooked it all up, let it warm up for a bit and nothing. Turned it off, tried using different inputs and nothing. Messed with it for a good 10 minutes and nothing. Decided to give it one last try and I cranked the gain all the way up and all of a sudden it was working. I turned the gain back to a reasonable level and it was working allright. I even turned it off and played with it again about 30 minutes later and it was fine.

This morning I decided I wanted to play for a few minutes before I went to work and nothing. My weekend plans have appeared to be foiled. At this point I would jusy assume return it, but am now outside the 30 day period. I think I am going to go out tomorrow and find a decent used head and wait this one out and hopefully it will get fixed right.

That's terrible. Try bypassing the effests loop by plugging a short instrument cable between effects out and in. This was a problem I had on an old GK 400. It was hell to find because it was intermittent. There's a third contact that is supposed to bypass the loop if nothing is plugged in. Sometimes these fail.

Also use some deoxit or similar cleaner on all the pots-volume and EQ just in case one or more is dirty and causing it to cut out. Take it back to the shop that repaired it for sure if you can't get it to work yourself.

Intersting idea...will definately have to try that later.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Hooking a patch cable in the effects loop solved the problem. There does seem to be more noise (not the fan) than I expected when I have the dial the master volume at about 9 o'clock. I am also curious as to where most of you have your gain set at?

I'm glad it worked out. You can get those jacks replaced and if it's under warranty Mesa should do it, or you can be lazy about it like I was with my GK, and just leave the patchchord in place. if you want to use the effects loop for effects it should work fine.

Hope you like your Walkabout. I sure like mine a lot.

Its a NOS with Brown Writing. It was the floor model at a GC and was the worse for wear because of it, but I got it for cheap. I just got it back after a 3 week repair wait. I makes me wonder if when they "fixed" it they tried it more than once. I asked for any recall work to be done, but I don't think it happened. This was all done through the local Mesa licensed repair shop.

Got an email from my tech today. He got the parts from Mesa, switched out the para-eq and...no dice. The noise is still there. He said that he started to look for shorts and opens on the PCB and he realized that the PCB is not the same as the schematic. So now he has to call Mesa back on Monday.

It's not his fault at all, but this is getting ridiculous. I wonder at what point they just replace the thing?

Just yesterday I heard a walkaboutscout (12" 4 ohm) and it sounded AWESOME!!! too bad the speaker is 4 ohms, can't add another.

I hope the 8 ohm mesa powerhouse cabs are just as nice sounding as the scout. oh, I just saw the scout cabs, I guess I'd like two of the 8 ohm scout cabs.

Well my near new Mesa Walkabout Scout is on it's way from Tacooooomma, WASHINGTONNNNN! (sorry)
Should be hear next Thursday. Got a very good price and comes with the Head gigbag and Clamshell case for the Scout. Still has about 3.5 years left on the warranty. The cab will probably never leave my music room but may take the head to play at church at times.

Recently it appeared I'm having trouble with the passive jack on my Walkabout. It cuts in and out, varying in volume when it does, and sometimes it just quits. I've tried different cables, and basses, and the active jack works perfectly fine.

Any suggestions on replacing it, would it be hard at all?

Well, the Walkabout is gone now unfortunately. Besides it only working with the effects loop bypassed, it seems there must have been some other problems going on. There was an incredible amount of noise in the sound.

I kinda just lost the patience to deal with it anymore. I don't blame Mesa at all, this was just a unit that had been beaten up too much for my liking. GC took it back even though it was about 15 days past 30, because it had been in repair for the vast majority of that time. Lucky for me they had a used Ashdown head that I picked up for a good deal, and it is fitting my needs nicely. I will revisit getting a Walkabout sometime in the future though.

I'm sorry about your luck with the Walkabout, but congrats on the Ashdown score! Their head are also pretty darn nice! :)

Hi guys,
Okay, so my Walkabout is still in the shop, but I've still decided I'd like to order an extention cab for it. I like the sound of my Scout combo, and I really just want more of that.

I could get the Scout radiator cab for like $750 (after I have is customized to match my scout). But after reading all the positive things people have to about Avatar, I'm thinking of buying a 2x10 or 2x12 neo from avatar with the green tolex. I know avatar isn't as good as the much higher end cabs, but it is supposed to be good, at least for R&R.

I'm wondering if for 4 string general playing, will the the avatar sound 'as good' as the Mesa Scout Radiator? I'm kind of over buying a lot of stuff just to try it out. I'd really like a high quality option and just be done with it. Will the Avatar get me there or should I just go for the Scout Extention?

Anyone here doubling with the walkabout? I'm curious how well this will work with Double Bass. I know it works well with electric...

If you're looking to lower your price somewhat from the mesa and still have a high quality product you may want to check on a schroeder mini 12 or mini 12+

I can't compare it to the scout or avatar, I've played niether, but I can tell you it matches well with the walkabout.

I can only opine about EUB, with the Scout 12. Great for hip-hop and maybe blues or bluegrass. Way too blurry for me for straight ahead jazz. I'd guess that's probably more about the cab than the head, but the Scout that I've used was stolen from my friend and I can't check into that. The Scout was very cool for fretless BG, for what it's worth.
