Don't mean to offend but I think that Japan has better metal bands than Gallhammer. It's just me, I've never really got what's so great about doom metal. If we're talking Japanese bands I like Alhambra, Galneryus, The Gazette, some X Japan and Loudness.

As long as we're on the topic of Japanese bands, here's a few of my favorites.

Named after the Melvins song (Listen to the Melvins, NOW), they're a weird mix of sludge, stoner and doom, with the occasional drone sneaking in. Highly recommended.

Yes! I've found so many great new (to me) bands I'm gonna try to keep this tread going. Plus I've had great fun going through my collection doing this.

Never heard of Gorefest before but truly epic rockin death metal band! Though for some reason the song kinda reminds of a heavy a$$ Eye of the Tiger!LOL!

Gama Bomb is great too! I loooooove me some straight up classic speed/thrash metal!

Guttural Secrete's got some gnarly @$$ vocals, sounds like he's choking on his own offal! Most brutal!

And about Gojira, I recently went on a bit of an old-school Godzilla kick, and realized that all the japanese that I thought just had bad accents, were actually saying "GOJIRA!!!!!" I guess its japanese for Godzilla! HAHAHA!

And if I wasn't a "SO %!@# BROKE" BASSIST" I would buy that Mammoth Grinder/Hated Surge double album right now! It only let me listen to 2 tracks but there's some great stuff right there!

Man, I knew this thread still had some life left! Ursus dude, eagerly awaiting the next installment, keep em comin!

Once again, Ursus shakin it up a bit with another great addition!

And to Nate, you got a "fair bit of catching up to do," but it is definitely worth it. I thought I had a fairly big metal vocabulary, but this thread has opened my eyes countless amounts of awesome bands that I would have otherwise probably gone my whole life without hearing and quite a few of them instantly shot up to favorite band status upon first listening!

I gotta admit too that when I saw this thread back up top I got kinda giddy...

For those who haven't heard: I.C.S. Vortex has rejoined Borknagar full-time on bass and backing vocals. Even better news is that even though Arcturus canceled ProgPower XII, they have a show planned in November at the Mega Club in Poland and next April headlining the Inferno show with Borknagar and Witchery!
