In my opinion, the P-bass just won't cut it for metal. J-basses just have that fat tone which gives the extra oomph necessary. I think that for metal, the best bass is warwick. It just has a powerful tone, which can cut through the mix.
And, although I haven't played a lot of Fenders, but those I have... Well I play in a metal band and they simply won't work. They're okay, but they don't have the edge, what Warwicks or Spectors have.
