Metal Tone

I know Metal gets a lot of down play here, but I'm curious as to what you guys do as far as tone goes. I use an Ampeg Svt-3 Pro and I'm trying to get a good cut in the mix. I use a Carvin LB75 with an HB-2 humbucker in the bridge. And insight what-so-ever would be greatly appreciated.

What cab are you using? What kind of EQ settings are you using? Where is your gain set?

Hook you up with a pic of my amp when i get home.

It really depends on the rest of the band. I find that depending on the band i will stand out more if i punch the high mids or the low mids. with my current band its the low mids. Its like a wall of bass when I turn up the low mid from my preamp on my bass.

I think a Sansamp works wonders for metal tone through an Ampeg rig (add some extra mids though). A "harsh" midrangey sound when you are solo'd will sound just right (mellowed out, but present) in the mix usually.

Playing style has a *lot* to do with it.

Big cabs help too if you just need more thunda.

Schecter stilleto 5 with Duncan blackouts and a Duncan two band eq, running into a Genz Benz shuttle 9 pushing a mesa powerhouse 1000. There the cabs that are a mixed 115 with 4 10's that everyone seems to dislike here, but I'm telling ya, put the Genz low end boost on, you can shut a door from across the room

it truly all depends on what metal tone you want. how many different metal bass tones are out there?! theres just heavy bass riffs and theres prog rock bass full of mids and treble, and then thers the bass that follows the guitar and is just metal dropped tuned bass. i run all warwick all ampeg... thumb bass through svt 5pro through either pr810 or pr410. with plenty of eq and a lil dirt doesnt hurt.
