Metal?

I love metal and hardcore - but I HATE COUNTRY arrrggh!

Bass always takes the backseat in these types of music! Ever seen the lead singer of a country band play bass?

I totally agree with you on this one. I wear metal shirts on occasion, but wearing any additional junk like spikes or leather just because you're expected to is absolutely ridiculous IMO. When I go to alot of metal shows, it almost feels as if the majority aren't even there for the music.

Punk and metal shows almost become clique reinforcement for highschoolers - their uniform.

From many conversations over the years here - I have found many people have the same experience as me - that is, we played heavy metal when we were kids (many years ago) - but grew out of it!!

How can you grow out of it? Metal was my first ever favorite genre of music. I've watched it, as I'm sure you have, evolve over the years and its gotten heavier, angrier, and much more rhythmic.

Im kinda new to the forum, but from what ive read there seem to be alota people against metal and hardcore music for some reason, they seem to think that theres a lot less talent to be found in there geners. I am myself a fan of metal but i also have a huge appreciation and liking of blues, jazz, punk, pretty much every type of music except most rap and most country. So just asking what peoples problems are with meal/hardcore music. Or maybe some of u all like it too. IDK thats why im posting this.

Well a lot of it's not complex music as such.

The personalisation of the violence in the lyrics kinds sux balls for me. That and the unintentional programming of aggression in minds susceptible to being moulded and not seeing the joke.

The music's got passion and conveys emotion I'll give it that.

And I spent many years smashing my brain against my forehead in my youth appreciating it too. Still enjoy the odd listen.

But listening to a song that opens with these beautiesL

I looooove metal. Almost everything on my ipod is metal. But, that being said I've found that often, usually younger, metal heads are often the most closed minded. Often they will refuse to enjoy any other type of music or just automatically say something else sucks because it is not HM with all the full out attitude the comes with it.

When I was a teen I and my click of buds were full on heavy metal heads. I happened upon Faith No More and the RHCP. FNM became my favorite band. I still liked metal, but my metal friends couldn't tolerate the types of music I was getting into because it wasn't full on metal.

I noticed they would get into death metal bands that all sounded alike and nothing else would even be considered. They acted like it was some code they had to live by or something.

It seemed to me, like a lot of metal heads, they were into metal just because it was metal and part of their scene, not because it genuinly moved them. Even when metal seems to become more popular it still has an underground feel to it.

And that's sad, because there is a lot of good metal out their deserving of audulation, but there is a lot crap metal that is getting fans just by being metal.

In the good metal you can make out the lyrics, even if they have more of scream voice.

IMO metal with just straight out wookie and or puberty screams that aren't unintelligible is just crap, and the sad result of what some kids think passes for metal.

What? There's something out there besides metal?! To think: all these years I've been listening to garbage and not even realizing it. And I thought I knew a thing or two about music. :scowl:

I hear you. One of my good friends Kyle is your typical all-out metal head. Our friend Dave recently sold about 2/3'rds of his metal and got out of a lot of bands he used to listen to. Kyle nagged him for weeks about selling off his Judas Priest, King Diamond, Cannibal Corpse etc and kept telling him he couldn't understand why he's completely changing as a person. Me and Dave just kind of shake our head, I can realize Dave's tastes have changed but Kyle acts like he's let down that Dave is no longer all about metal. Dave has gotten into Classic rock and RHCP a lot recently.

I don't get it. I can put on some random underground metal album I have with generic blast beats and Kyle will think the drumming is wonderful, but if I play a Hella or Don Cab album he never says a word about the drumming (Which blows most metal drummers out of the water, clearly). Most metal seems so generic, in tone, composition, lyrical themes etc. That's one of the reasons I first got into Opeth is because they could have death metal sections followed by soft acoustic passages, all being intertwined by poetic lyrics about something genuine; their own feelings; rather than another zombie themed song.

I've always been down for going to local death metal and thrash shows, listen to a lot of good metal bands like Kreator, Electric Wizard, Decapitated, Dark Angel, Spiral Architect, Macabre etc, but at the same time I've been into groups / artists like Squarepusher, Six Organs Of Admittance, Anglagard, Yanni, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, Al DiMeola, Nick Drake, Jethro Tull, Sigor Ros, Storm & Stress etc. I've never seen a good reason to limit myself to one branch of music like so many metal heads do, outside of a few token classic rock bands.

well alot of people consider metal to be 'noise' as they call it, that all of it alll sound the same, now, take a band like metallica, obviously there will be differences between the songs but alot of it because of the distortion and mainly because of the distortion its hard to distinguish between riffs.

now take say as a random, weather report, the bass in that is completely different, but not only different to metal but totally different to the rest of thier music.

i have nothing against metal, not my fave kind of music but i can listen to it.

I've never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Some of them are so into brutal death metal or metalcore or whatever that they don't listen to anything else, even older metal.

As for myself, I am a big fan of pretty much any kind of metal, from death to black to traditional to doom. I just bought Sad Wings of Destiny by Judas Priest today, as a matter of fact.

No wise ass. But I was referring to some of the better metal out there. If you like orchestration and good piano work, check out some of Dimu Borgir stuffs. You honestly might like them.

If you like it more rhythmic then check out some Lamb of God. Gojira is just straight up your ass metal.

Most people I know love the music just cant get past the lyrics. Its a shame really.

I got turned away from death metal at first becuase of the lyrics. When I got used to them more, I started liking death metal and metal in general more.
