I've got a student who first took guitar lessons from me. This young man clearly has the music gene and is a pleasure to teach, although he's not very serious about his playing just yet. He's playing a nice-enough top-carved Roma, 3/8 size.

His school uses a book called Standard of Excellence and it's apparently used for all instruments so they can all both practice separately and play together. I need something more grown up than this for him.

My other choice is Simandl, which is what I learned and continue to learn from, but it's awfully unfriendly for a 5th grader. I'd like something less grown up than this.

Suggestions appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Perhaps another person can recommend something else.
However, I wouldnt dream of starting anyone on anything other than Simandl. I think a bright and eager 5th grader would do ok. Just take it slow.
I remember my teacher would throw in little tidbits of songs on occasion to help me hold my interest. Lt. Kije was the first one i learned.
Good luck 8)

I wrote a method for students just like this. I was running into new private students that were coming out of a year or so from those 'mixed instrument' classes - cellos, basses, etc. So, I wrote "Practical Studies for Double Bass". It assumes they have a knowledge of basic whole notes, half notes, etc. and the A or 1st position. The student and you will LOVE it. Lemur or the ASODB (ASODB.com) carry it.

Tom, can you give me an exact title, ISBN number, etc.? I'll order a copy. I recall, a year or three ago, talking with you about something you'd written - don't think this was it, though, so I don't think I ordered this already but I'm not sure.

Thanks.

It's "Practical Studies for Double Bass". If you want to try a copy, send me $13 instead of $16. I'll send it to you 'media mail' (cheap!) and take care of the postage.
