If you want to slap, go active...your able to get a punchier sound. MIM Fender Jazz Deluxe is a good starter bass. The builds are usually pretty good these days. The pickups are all I ever upgraded on my Jazz. They aren't bad, just not great. But plenty good while your learning to play. The neck and action on mine is as good as it gets...never really thought about changing the tuners, they have always held well. Just comes down to pickups. But even with stock pickups, there is a very nice growl to be had from Jazz basses!
