Mic advice seeked

Hi all,

I play bass ina HC/punk band and we have a not so small problem with the mic our singer/guitarrist uses. It’s so strictly takes sound from straight ahead only that we will need to replace it.

We need one that can be sung into from the side, from below, whatever, as you happen to step to it in the heat of the moment.

Could you please bombard me with suggestions of mic brands/models that could be suitable? We’re on a low budget so high end stuff is out of the question but something with a good price/value is our target.

For the money this is the one I'd suggest. They're virtually bullet proof and the leading vocal mic for life performing. You can be slightly off axis or back a bit from the windscreen. It will still pick up your vocal but you'll lose some frequency response.

No dynamic vocal mic will allow you to just sing into it from just anywhere but you'll decent response up to about 45 degrees off axis from an SM58.

How much are you looking to spend?
For dynamics,
Shure SM58

I use a Senn e935. It suits my voice a little better than an SM58, which the rest of my band uses. They are both great mics.

It sounds like your issue is the mic pickup pattern. You are already using a cardioid mic so an SM58 is not going to change in the pickup pattern. A mic that picks up from all sides is an Omnidirectional mic, but I would NOT recommend this for live use as it causes feedback problems. A better mic, like an SM58, might sound better but it is not going to pick up any better from the side. Mics are designed that way for a reason to cancel out other sounds and isolate what it is picking up. It sounds more like a problem with mic technique that your singer needs to work on. A mic is a tool designed to work a certain way. Use it properly and it will work.

Except the Beta 58A is a supercardioid which would just exasturbate the situation. If the singer has the problem with the PG58, he'll have the same problem with the SM58 since they're both cardioid mics. The ostensible solution would be to use an omnidirectional mic, but that would probably suck royally since it picks up everything from everywhere, and the stage bleed and feedback would be perfectly rotten.

Another solution would be to get a headset mic. But I'd say it's time for the singer to work on his mic technique. Seriously.
