I don't remember who made the "there's bassists with master's or Phd's in music out of jobs and michael cera gets this gig?!" arguement. But I can't even wrap my head around that arguement at all. In college, I noticed the undergrad music majors had already started down the elitist path of "there's nothing good out there, only I and the other music majors know what good music is and you don't so you're wrong" attitude that I seem to have noticed in the majority of music students, be they undergrad, or graduate, or doctorate students. I don't care if they know more about music and can probably play the hell out of their bass, if I was in the position that this band is in, I would also be like "yea this guy can play his bass, but he's kind of a dick. why don't we just get michael cera because he's our friend and he's cool and he can handle it." The haters are reading way too far into this situation. Especially considering that Michael cera isn't even a confirmed permanent member of this band. He's probably just their friend.
I am by no means a professional, but I've been in situations with bands where I've quickly realized that if I'm not doing it with my friends, then it's not worth doing. I'd rather play with a good friend who is ok at their instrument, than play with someone who is awesome at their instrument but I don't get along with at all. Isn't playing music supposed to be about having fun?
