Double Bass Micing with a bass amp

Thanks Groove Doctor. I started this thread as my first post here on Talk Bass. I am still amazed at the interest it has generated. I would love for other people to know about how nicely this little Radio Shack mic works for DB. I still can't believe it myself. The people who have tried it throughout this thread have proven that it isn't for everyone, but for those who it has worked well have saved a ton of money and have found a amplified set up that reproduces the sound of the bass quite well. I have been thrilled with the results on my bass.
After reading this thread I walked over to my local Radio Shack and bought the clip on mic. I haven't dialed in how it attaches to my bass yet but the initial test of foam sandwich in f hole, my amplified bass sounds much better than my Rev Solo II PU! I'm really pleased with the results. W/the Rev Solo I had to do a fair amount of EQing and I've never liked the tone. W/the Radio Shack Mic my amp settings (GB Shuttle 3.0) are set flat and it sounds great. Hey Stereo Joe! What kind of strings are showing in your pic? [yellow ends at the tailpiece] This has been an awesome thread and I hope to see it continue... I don't mean to derail it so... has anyone tried this little mic in conjunction with the Fishman Pro Plat?
Hey Scotty - that's a set of Velvet Garbos with the gut 'G' string. Awesome strings but the 'D' is a little hard to bow...
I may have started this thread, but Farmerdude is the one to thank. When I asked the question I never expected such a cheap and excellent solution. My sound has been unbelievable and I also have my amp set almost completely flat with great results.
gack, any report on the Headway? Anyone else... are you using this mic w/ Fishman Pro Plat or other pre?
I have received my Headway just yesterday and didn't have much time to play with it. All I can say for now, I couldn't get significantly more volume before feedback plugging it into markbass cmd 121h. I need to try it with the band, though.
i finally got a chance to use the the RS clip on mic last night and I am very pleased. My bass but louder, simple to use - just plug and play, no feedback, good volume and overall string balance/volume.
I used the RS on a brunch yesterday with a guitar player. (Eberle laminate with Bassworks synthetic gut strings) I sandwiched the mic in some foam and put it in the F hole. It sounded amazing but began to feedback so I switched to my Full Circle (Full Circle sounded nowhere near as good) After the gig, the guitar player told me that since it`s a uni directional mic, it will feedback if it`s encapsulated in the foam; better to have the end stick out of the foam a bit. Can anyone comment on this?
I noticed feedback if my bass was in front of the amp with the mic pointing backward at the amp. So I just move the amp to the side and on the same plane as my bass - no more feedback.
I have noticed several people who have used this mic stuff it into foam. I guess it depends on what amp you are using, but I would think that the foam would make it feedback more. The way the supplied clip is oriented, it makes the mic point upward if you clip it on to the F hole. I unscrewed the mic holder from the tie clip and glued it in a direction that makes the mic point directly into the bass body. When I did that the feedback was greatly reduced. I play with my amp (GK Backline 112) directly behind my bass about 2 or 3 feet. I almost never have any feedback issues. In fact, the only feedback I have had has been when I turned around without thinking and faced the mic directly into the amp (oops). Other than that, it's been pretty much feedback free.
Been reading through this off and on but just wanted to clear up a question. Are you guys running the tie clip mic through a pre amp? Or straight to the amp or board.
