I'm gonna be in the market for a new car in 2017, and I'm considering the GTI. Haven't driven it yet, but it looks great.

Me and the wife don't have kids (and aren't going to), so she's been driving self-indulgent cars for awhile. Her current ride is a 2016 Nissan 370Z Touring.

The current GTI is an insanely good small car. It sets the bar very high for all so-called hot hatches. Everything about it is dialed in with great attention to detail. And I'm averaging over 33 MPG (YMMV).

The '18 is getting a facelift and all-digital gauges. The '17 has analog gauges which I personally prefer.

Ironically, the OP started this thread on my 55th birthday. Anyway, as soon as the weather breaks (this morning it's 6 degrees with several inches of snow on the ground) my garage will become home to either a blue with white rally stripes 2017 Camaro SS convertible or a 50th Anniversary Camaro SS convertible. Yup, that's gonna happen. Neither car is suitable for getting my gear to a gig, but so what.

Tesla's are awesome! If you can pull it, it is a car you will enjoy for years. My wife got one last year. Her car is 0 to 60 in 5.3 seconds and corners like a Porsche. My buddy bought a black one around the same time with the double motors. His will do 0 to 60 in an incredible 3.2 seconds. That is faster than many $300K exotics. The build and fit and trim is top notch also.

I am about due for a new car in 17. I can't justify spending Tesla money, but the lack of maintenance for all electric vehicles is highly appealing. I have a Prius V now. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I may check out the Chevy Bolt.

They are definitely nice! When I bought my house last year, our home inspector had one. That was my first chance to really check one out up close. I've wanted one since then.

I have NEVER in my 66 years regretted an impractical car purchase. I've made a number of them, and I've enjoyed the hell out of every one.

My last one was a 1983 280ZX Turbo, bought in 1990 when we had two young kids. But we had a family car (Audi 5000 sedan) and so it didn't matter. I still have the 280, my kids and wife love it, and I'm glad I still have it.

I learned years ago while selling cars that NO ONE drives the car they need; they drive the car they want. Nearly everyone who doesn't tow horse trailers through muddy fields, drive a pickup through 12" of freshly plowed dirt or harvest timber up a mountainside could do what they need to do with a 4-door, basic AWD sedan. But that's not what we buy.

We buy cars that reflect our wants and needs. If someone drives a stripped down econobox, that's a statement about values. Same for a corvette, same for the jacked-up toy pickup with loud pipes that will never see a load in the bed. Same for tricked-out mom vans.

If the OP wants a latter-day muscle car, GO FOR IT. A car purchase isn't forever. Enjoy it while you want to.

I would love to see the timeslip for those passes. I'm curious about the incremental times..... 60', 330', 660' 1000' and the mph associated with them...... That's a wild ride. And to think my 700 HP Camaro isn't really that much quicker than the Tesla is..... wow!!!

Any idea how much his Tesla weighs?

As long as the Jaguar Bass has better electronics than the Jaguar cars, you'll be ok.
