"Mid-life Crisis" Car Purchase

VOTE FOR THE CHARGER!
Wifey had one as a rental car that I get her when she goes 500 miles one-way to visit her Mom & family while I play zoo keeper and work. It happened to be available over a weekend when our manager double-booked us(noon charity gig in Houston for Ronald McDonald House, night gig in College Station at a ranch).....so I borrowed it. BOSE fit, 2 basses fit, my pedalboard/cable case(full size keyboard case) fit, toolbox fit. No room for anyone else after that but NO WAY in a Challenger. Now the fun parts.

Normally a full-size van is my gig-mobile at about 16 mpg and not really pushed hard(215,000+ miles so far). The Charger got amazing mpg IF you kept your foot out of it, which I mostly did. There was one pedal-masher. The ranch gig is down a FM Road(Farm-to-Market number road for those not familiar with Texas labels) that is mostly straight in light hill country. I came over a rise and saw our drummer about 1/4 mile ahead doing about 60 or so....and pedal on metal, pushed back in the seat, tach heads for the redline very fast, gears change very fast, and I pass him doing about double what he's doing before we hit the next hill. Oh, free adrenaline dump too.

Again, I'd vote for the Charger. The stereo in it kicks posterior also.

Final Note: It did make a unique sound on the first start of the morning, almost like a power steering pump needing fluid that lasted a couple of minutes but I checked all the fluids and they were OK. Maybe ask a Dodge tech/gearhead about that one.

Yes, just not as much as I used to.

I was racing two nights a week, building cars for others and crewing on an IHRA/NSCA team several weekend a summer, now I'm down to a handful of races a year with my own cars.
The cost of racing went waaaayyyy up between entry fees, fuel, fuel for the tow rig & generator, etc to the point that it became too much. Plus, with a family it was hard to be gone so often. now with my Son out on his own and my Daughter graduating High School this year I'm hoping to get out more.

$11 a gallon for 112 octane.

We ran 118 octane in our 6 second 2000 Vette. Bought it by the 55 gallon drum, even back then it was $17 a gallon.

I had a Jag similar to this when I was still living in England.....Went up in flames after a really bad engine rebuild :mad::(.....

Now I'm looking at modern muscle cars and since I'm a Mopar guy I'm leaning toward either a newer Challenger or Charger. The Charger is a bit more practical since it is a four door sedan but I really like the look of the Challenger. I'm going to check out the Camaro and Mustang as well. Whatever I get it will be used, probably in the range between 2012-2015 and I would like to stay in the low $20K range as my max price.
Curious who else has made a less practical car purchase and did you later regret it?
What are some other models I may want to check out?

I have owned two English built cars. A 2000 Jag S model and a 1978 Lotus Esprit. The electrical design with the Lotus was a nightmare. The Jag had some problems too. My mechanic friend use to laugh and say, " The Brits should not be allowed to wire a simple flashlight, let alone a frickin automobile". I got tired of hearing that from him.
With that said, I hear that the newer JAG's do not have the electrical problems as they did in the past.

Lotus were famous for their awful wiring back then....Your mechanic friend was right on the money as far as Lotus was concerned.....My Jags end was brought about by the engine builder buggering up the installation of the carbs.....Nothing to do with the electrics....
Newer Jags aren't even built in the UK now as far as I know.....India I think....Could be wrong on that point though...:)
