"Mid-life Crisis" Car Purchase

2004 GTO:

That car has the personality of an unflushed toilet.

Yeah, man. Those cars are so over the top and then sometimes when they show up to race the other guys' cars are even moreso. You're probably right about the VINs. Though there have been a couple that seemed slightly more street worthy than the others.

To me it's an illusion that they are real street cars, just like it was 25 years ago when myself and a bunch of friends were heavily involved in the street legal movement. Although, most of the cars then were backhalf cars that were more like what you would see on the street compared to the chrome moly double frame rail 25.2 cars of today. Still, most of the cars then couldn't make a 25 mile cruise without swapping in different ratio rockers (to save valve springs) or without nitrous spraybars rigged across the radiator to keep the cars from overheating. I wonder how many of the cars on Street Outlaws could make the cruise today?

And as far as it being "street racing", we all know it's staged. But, if it puts a$$es in the stands and gets people interested in racing then so be it. As long as people keep the racing off the streets and on the track, it's all good.

No question today's muscle cars out perform the 1960's & 70's ones, but imo they lack the personality of the older cars. 10 - 15 years from now I don't see a crowd of people going nuts for a 2015 Camaro, yet they will for a 1970 Chevelle.

There's just something about brute force and ignorance from then that the modern cars can't replicate in the same style.

Modern cars have to conform to engineering standards that classic muscle cars never had to worry about. When gasoline was 30 cents a gallon and cars were powered by 400 hp big blocks, no one cared if the vehicle was aerodynamic. Stick some wings on it in the back. Bulge out the fenders. Make the front look like a giant, angry face. It plowed through the air like a brick, but looked cool as hell.

I have been riding motorcycles for a long time. A sportbike will generally outrun any car. Not that I would know...

Given the need to have a midlife crisis car, it would have to be something like this, only metallic pink, with side pipes:

It would NOT have anything remotely like a Ghostbusters car about it.

Great. I'm on Hemmings looking at hearses. There is a 1985 Cadillac Hearse with 43,000 miles on the odometer in New Hampshire for $5000. It would be a LOT cooler than my current Honda Minivan gear hauler.

Crank up that fuel bill...

Aaaah, who am I fooling. I drive an aging Chevy van. My goal is to turn Seattle into a tropical paradise by burning as much gasoline as possible. Too bad I only drive it once or twice a week. A hearse would probably do better.

I noticed that minivan drivers drive so slow and always run red lights and stop signs. True story. Is that you guys? ^^ It pisses me off cause I have to wait an extra five minutes cause the minivan driver was going so slow yet he always decides to run a red light. They all do it.

They look better in person. And they're fast as hell. Anyway I'm kinda looking too. I need a 'muscle wagon.' High performance 'Estate' car. Caddy used to make a cool one. What's out there now besides the very expensive German cars?

Hey man, my Magnum R/T is 11 years old (they only made them from 05-08) and still looks fantastically mean, and drives really nicely. The 5.7L Hemi spins the rear wheels from a stop even on dry pavement, with pretty much anything over 50% go-pedal. Sounds great, too. I call it the Gigahearse. It's low and wide in person in a way that pics can't really show; the roof line is low enough it looks like an old chopped hotrod.

The worst people to get behind in traffic because they're so DAMN SLOW:

Minivan drivers
Any Saturn vehicle
Any Prius
Any clapped-out vehicle running a compact spare on one corner

I worked with a guy who drove his Prius like a freaking rally car. He actually shifted the little automatic lever into different modes just to take corners and pass people and things. It was really odd.

I agree with this 100%. I've owned several true muscle cars and they have a totally different vibe and feel that a hot hatch cannot touch. And it's different for each.

In the late 80's, I had a 68 Mustang fastback with the 289 and 4 speed. It was amazingly crude and unsophisticated. But fun, fun fun.
Later I had a 76 Camaro with a modded 350 (330 HP) Also fun, but in a different way.
Had a 88 Mustang with a 351W and lots of upgrades. best performance car I've ever owned.

My brother had a 2003 Cobra. I drove it a few times and realized how much of a monster that thing really is. It was a chick magnet for him and he had to sell it, partly because his wife wanted it gone.

The muscle cars of the past few years are so much more powerful and better performing in every way compared to even ten years ago. It's astonishing just how much the technology has improved cars in such a short time.
You got that right. My wife has a 2013 Mustang Convertible. (I get to drive it ....sometimes...) It has "just" the V6, but still good for 305HP. More than the old Boss 302 or the 351 had before pollution controls!

Yep...the 2004 GTO was a hugh dud. It just looked like another boring car. What the heck was GM thinking?

I couldn't agree more about the look of the GTO, but have you ever ridden in one? I have a buddy who has a 2006. He is a mechanic so it's far from stock but holy hell that thing is fast! The interior is very cool too. Much different than any Cavalier. I think part of the appeal of those GTO's is that they are so unassuming looking but they can haul @ss!

I've seen enough of the later GTO's in person to know they're not for me..... no personality whatsoever. If it wasn't for the GTO badges I'd think it was a two door Grand Prix.

Do it, and get whatever you're happy with. Here is my current ride (got it 7 years ago, just turned 50 this year):

Sweet ride!
I just bought the same thing last week, except in White.
And I am over 50.
When I was at the dealer negotiating, I kept thinking..."what the hell am I doing....what the hell am I doing"....
So glad I did.
To the OP....Do it!

Nice! Those black wheels look sharp on that color combo!

Just Curious. What does "CS" stand for on the decal on car?
California Special. The original was introduced as a '68 model. It's really just an appearance package; the drivetrain is exactly the same as a standard GT.
  • GT500 rear bumper/splitter
  • GT/CS side stripes
  • Side scoops
  • Some came with hood scoops (mine didn't)
  • Tan or dove (grey) seat inserts
