“It could be worse.” Yeah, definitely. I got to the point where I was collecting - and focusing on what to buy next next - and not playing much. And gear is piling up. But still looking at out for “stuff I might need” or “always wanted that”.
A friend of mine was on his second marriage, with a young wife and was raising little kids - but had been through that whole cycle already, and retired from his job. He was dropping $$$ weekly on really nice stuff - dream instruments to me - and just getting 1-2 each week. He had the money to do so while raising little kids, the second time around. I was buying gear at the time, but a LOT more budget compared to his museum.
If it gets to the point where you feel you have too many instruments and you don’t even get to enjoy them, thrn you know you reached the tipping point.

I had my crisis earlier in life...at about age 36. Spent about $12k on basses in a year (partly in crisis and partly due to some unexpected and lucrative gigs); one Sadowsky NYC and one Fbass AC6. At 47, I feel another crisis coming on. LOL
I'll be 69 in January so I don't know if mine would be a midlife crisis or a last hurrah thing. I've been building fretless basses since I retired 3 years ago. I've completed revamped/upgraded my bass amplification and p.a. systems. And I bought a small Ford Transit to carry it all around. Although I do have a music room, I'm in the processes of finishing "The Green Room" for recording. Why? Well partly, no mostly, I don't know how long I have to do this stuff!
OTOH, I've always been a car guy and have had my eye on a local Porsche 914 that needs pretty much everything. Today while on our morning walk we passed by a house that has a yard full of VW's and 4x4's. I told the wife that she should thank her lucky stars that I only have time for basses and playing live!

That the era that's stuck in my head. My late teens/early 20s. That's when I was in the Army. That's when I met my wife and got married. That was my favorite decade and those bands and many more are that part of my life's soundtrack.
