Mike Dirnt is a great bassist! He's not the greatest bassist ever, but when you listen to some of the stuff from Dookie, he's awesome!

I agree with Dash Rantic when it comes to him toning down in American Idiot, which I find a shame, but if you listen to longview, Minority, When I come Around etc. he is really good!

Shame about American Idiot (apart from the bass solo/bridge in Holiday)

I actually think his playing on American Idiot was pretty good, albeit a bit more restrained but the album wouldn't sound right with tonnes of fills. Just like any bass player, ya gotta know when to turn it up a notch or when to hold back. This is him holding back.

It'll be interesting to see what the next album holds.

If you listen to his early work, on 1039/Smooth is awesome. Even if you watch some of the live footage from around that time, his playing was great!

In more recent times, if you listen to his work with his other band, The Frustrators. (where I got my username from )
You can hear him really at it. He ain't using the MD signature Fenfer either, he uses an early 80's G&L L-1000 with them most of the time. It sounds awesome!

He's done some other session stuff that sounds cool too, like his work on Sabriana Stewarts Smoking Gun EP.

Add another Mike Dirnt fan here... Been a fan of GD/Dirnt for a long time and playing bass for about 2 years...

Comparing one bass player to another isn't really an apples to apples kind of comparision unless you stay within the same genre...

When is that new GreenDay album coming out anyway? Their dookie album and earlier stuff was great, but I dident like AI. (the radio woiuld play Holiday ever fricken minute).

BassSurfer, you're obviously a huge fan of Greenday and that's cool.

He uses a pick, loses points with me just based on that. No right hand technique.
He plays ok, nothing more to me. His playing fits the simple chords of Greenday. Compare him to a Mike Watt with the minutemen or firehose, and he doesn't register on the same scale to me.

If he's a "great" bassist, what does that make Larry Graham or Geddy Lee?

I'm mostly a pick player myself but that how i was taught (My dad is/was a guitard) i got started following his roots at home as a kid. You finger only guys really piss me off there are advantages to both and if you don't incorporate a litle pick playing into your style then you are closed minded and missing out on making yourself a better bass player.

Back to Mr. Dirnt....he is a very solid player and what he does fits in the context of the band he plays in....and let's face it he has a recording contract....any bassist in a three piece has to be able to hold his own and that he does very well...

is he Steve Harris, or Geezer Butler, or Les Clypool? no but so what?

Appreciate Green Day and Mr. Dirnt for what they are a platinum disc selling band....and fun to listen to

Finally... someone knows the true Dirnt.. lol it took a while but hey whatever... did anyone here the new GD material in the FoxBoro Hot Tubs? just like the Network.. but more of a 60's sound..
