Mike Huckabee with Rickenbacker

I'd buy a limited-run Ric / Mike Huckabee model. Wouldn't have to change much, just add a pickguard with the Arkansas state flag and signature a la Roger McGuinn. Chris Squire has passed, Sir Paul is semi-retired, and Geddy Lee (...strongly associated!) lent his name to Fender.

He's not a famous musician, though; he's a prominent politician. These are not the same thing. There is no "separating the art from the artist" here. His entire public persona is being a conservative christian/elected politician. In that roll, he has taken real actions that have real effects on people's lives. Sure, he plays bass, but that's secondary, just like bill clinton tooting his saxamaphone.

Frankly, referring to him as simply a celebrity playing bass is a bit reductive.

He is also a minister, TV show host, radio show host, author, husband, father and grandfather.

Frankly, referring to him as simply a prominent politician is a bit reductive. Nobody is just one thing. Just because you can’t “separate the art from the artist” doesn’t mean others can’t. Why not talk about Clinton’s sax playing on a saxophone forum? I’d be happy to if I played that instrument. There could be an interesting discussion about people who are famous for things other than being a musician, but still find a way to make music a well known part of their public life.

I think it's somewhat well known that he's not bad. There's video of him playing with Ted Nugent.

There is also video of him playing Sweet Home Alabama with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pour Some Sugar on Me with Def Leopard and Blind with Brian Welch as well as a bunch of other stuff. Plenty of music content and a variety of basses to discuss.

Yeah... not habit-forming, my foot!

The evidence is out there that sleeping pills are habit-forming and can create dependency and even addiction in users. In my mind, drugged sleep is not good sleep.

Plus, I've spent enough time in gigging/touring bands, to know better than to accept drugs (especially pills) that other musicians are shilling.

Relaxium's active ingredients are melatonin and tryptophan. There's a little "organic" nonsense in there, but nothing dangerous, unless you consider chamomile or passionflower addictive.

Probably not lol. I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you. That solution would not be legal in many states or conducive to some peoples lifestyles or employment. I have found other tools to help with sleeping issues that are not substance based.

I figure in a thread like this, people would either bag on the guy's politics and/or bag on the guy's instruments (since both are divisive), so I chose to bag on the Relaxium ad itself coming across to me like shilling a snake oil drug.

Sleep disorders are no joke and literally affect every aspect of peoples' daily life and functioning. There is no making light of that. I apologize for any insensitivity there.

Yes, but it’s a gateway to harder candy. Couple years from now, you’ll be selling your blood for a Zagnut or box of stale Peeps.

There’s a couple of us here that do some level of sleep medicine for a living. The condition can be serious but some of the stories we hear are funnier-than-hell.

That's a fair point. I think what I mean is that they had their greatest impacts on people in their roles as politicians, both in terms of how much they affected people and in terms of how many people they affected. Also, those effects are likely deeper and longer lasting. As such, I think it's fair that it would be difficult to separate these folks musical endeavors from their politics/beliefs/etc.

Also, not for nothing, but Huckabee's roles as minister, TV/radio host and author are likely an extension of his politics. At the least, they all inform each other. So they're not entirely distinct from each other.

ummmm actually, a celebrity according to Oxford is a "famous" person. He is a famous person, who is multi faceted. He is a musician, he is a politician, he is a speaker, he is a minister, he is... etc etc .

A drummer I used to play with jammed with huckabee. He may have been the best drummer I got to play with. We had opposite politics but our relationship was purely musical. Great guy. Miss playing with him.
