I've heard its bad to keep laptops on top of or that close to speaker cabs because of the magnets. Does anyone know if thats true? If so, you may be putting your hard drive at serious risk, if its false, than I[m an idiot, and nevermind ;)

No thats right Wolf . It is also bad to keep speakers near you normal computer screen , as the hard drive.
Though the newer TFT screens is not as sensitive.

I like that. No fear of digital or modeling.

Is the laptop an integral part of the rig (preamp, effects, etc.)?

Yes the laptop is an integral part, i use the Ampeg SVX and use a couple of the amp settings into my FX Loop nothing like a ampeg tube preamp with a GK1001 to enter tonal heaven.

And about the magnets, there is more than enough space and material between the laptop and the magnets to cause any harm.
