Today at practice, my main bass stopped working. I heard a loud popping sound and then nothing. At first I thought it was my cord, but I switched to my backup bass and it worked fine. So, I need to find somebody in the Twin Cities area who works on basses, particularly the electronics (this bass has an old active EMG preamp.)

Any recommendations?

Is your output jack loose? Could the battery connection be bad? I mean at the jack (most use a stereo jack, routing the - voltage to the ring and then to the pickup or preamp from the sleeve). I have seen this on a few active basses. Unless you plugged in a stereo cord...

I've found Willie's to be very stuck up. The few times I've gone there they've sneered at me because I don't play a pre-CBS Fender.

I've had great luck with Dave Rusan down in Bloomington. Rusan Guitarworks is the name of his company. He does some nice work, although you will probably have to wait a few weeks for things to get fixed.

You were right. I opened it up and there is clearly a broken connection between the battery and the output jack, as you described. I think this repair may be within my very limited abilities. I just need to buy some solder.

Thanks to everyone who replied!

Can't make it guys, maybe next time. Got a conflict.
I edited me off the list.

I've brought my instruments to Leonard Shapiro (goes by Moses Oakland). He runs a small guitar repair shop out of one of the spaces at Profile Sound on University Avenue, near the U of M East bank.

I think he still hosts an open jam on Sundays at Famous Daves (or at least he used to a decade ago).

I go to Eclipse Music in West St. Paul. Guy (the younger one is the one I've dealt with) does great work and he's a bass player. Great work and great conversationalist as well!

Also...Hi! Lived in the twin cities my whole life but I only recently discovered TB, been in one other band before Link Removed.

on that day? How do we know if they are in fact turkeys of the jive variety?

ANSWER - they posted their name on the list.. posted a few times on this thread.. then came up with some jive turkey reason why they couldn't make it "but will do it next time"

I must be getting old and bitter - or realize how full of it most folks are when it comes time to dance.

Crotchety quetion --- you in or out.. gonna show or make an excuse

Gear question.. I have some funky junk..I can bring an asbhory, TL-5, TL-5, Ashbory, RJ-IV, Custom cabs, Crate Block - I have a connection to a vendor who will lend new Marshall or SWR gear

Anyone have something they've wanted to try.

Tim

I've inked it on my calendar. We'll see if I turn out to be some sort of exotic poultry.

I propose a second list: Who's sticking out their gibblet and saying yes?

Gibblet List:

MNAirHead
Kraigo
coolrunner989

Add your name to the Gibblet List if you plan to attend! 4/29/09 7:00. Seven more and we have half of us sticking our necks out. I'd consider this to be a number worthy of MNAirHead going through the effort of hosting.

I'd also like to start accumulating a list of gear being brought. If no one is bringing a Genz Benz NeoX 212T or Shuttle 6.0 I'll bring mine. Otherwise I might bring my old Traynor Mark II all tube head or perhaps a sealed 4x10 with Jensen Mod 10/50's in it. The Shuttle/NeoX are a rig I wanted to hear but couldn't audition before I bought. Now I'm over $1200 into them. Scary to take a leap like that.

I'm half expecting to bring a small drumset either way - I'm a better drummer than bassists and it'd be more fun for me. I'd probably bring my Noguera five string fretless because it's my most unique bass. If anyone is dying to hear Nordstrom Dual Coil pickups or a Duncan Antiquities II P-Bass pickup, I might go through the effort.

Gibblet List/gear you're bringing/gear you'd like to get a chance to hear.
