I am attempting to setup a monitor mixer onstage for for myself and the singer. I plan on running out of the 4 sub mixes on our foh board into 4 channels on a mixer. Would an allen and heath zed 14 be a good choice for this? Only reason I want to go with controlling the monitor mix is because our soundman just bought a presonus board with an ipad and he is still learning about it and trying to find him in the club is a pain sometimes with the freedom of an Ipad for on the fly adjustments. Any thoughts?

So, your soundman has a way to adjust the monitor mix onstage (via the iPad), but you want more of an old-school way of doing it yourself cause he's not doing a good job of it? And, this mix you'd be controlling would be for the whole band, or just for you and the singer while the soundman kept running the IEM mix(es) for the rest of the band?

You really should just get together with Scott and get your monitor mix figured out, what you are trying to do is only going to add more confusion and quite frankly....added mess on the stage.
Either run a completely seperated monitor setup from FOH, or have FOH control it....Don't try making it a hybrid.
For complete seperation you will need your own mixer with enough channels to mic everything needed along with a splitter snake.
This way you get everything and can control your own mix without interfearing with the FOH mix.

The reality is that until your sound guy has a method to use IEM, you're fighting an uphill battle. ... EVERY mic in the room will react differently to different rooms.
After being IEM 95% of the time, the easiest metthod is a "more me mixer"
When in the sound guy seat, "more me" is the request 90% of the time.

A PM351 is a pro-class pass through mixer... your output levels stay the same.. your personal mix of vocals and instrument are blended with the standard monitor mix.... you then can plug in an 1/8 or 1/4 plug to your wireless....
When you have a room that doesn't like wireless (or a small gig... or a powered monitor) you can simlply plug directly into the PM351.
Used they're about $70...
It doesn't ad confusion to live performance.. it simplifies the requests to a sound guy (who 99% of the time is focused on the mains --- not monitor mix)
I'll be the first to point that a touring band running IEM commonly will have one guy focused on IEM mixes.. not mains.... folks forget this and expect magic.... the magic PM351 is the easiest option to overcome the issue.
If you already have an iPad, you can adjust your own monitor/IEM mix from stage using the Presonus remote control app. Clip the iPad to your mic stand, and you're good to go.

You'll be wasting money. Every time a channel is changed in the house mix, your mix will change, so your soundman will still be in control of it. The only way around that will be to use the channel direct outs. By the time you do that, you'll have spent your iPad money.

The reason I thought about the sub groups is because we played a show a few weeks back and I wanted to try recording with my zoom hd16. Our sound man suggested running it off the sub groups, that way I could eq the drums, bass, guitar, and vocals separately and mixdown later. It worked great! So I thought I could do the same but setup a monitor mix instead of a recording mix.
You take a line from the FOH mix, I use the mono out xlr on the desk and run that into the pm351, you run your mic into the pm351 and then out to the desk. You run your bass into the pm351 and then out to the desk. You then have the ability to mix both your vocal and bass dominant to the FOH mix. Dead easy and highly recommended!
