MLB 2024

I'm proud of Jenny Cavnar, a Colorado State U. grad who has worked with the Rockies and done other sportscasting for the past 12 years.

She's the new primary play-by person for the Oakland A's, soon to become the "Vegas Somethingoranothers." First woman to be the primary play-by announcer in the history of MLB!

One thing said about her in jest, but which is also true, is that she's good at dressing up a bad product in her Rockies broadcasts. Unfortunately she'll have to use that skill in dealing with the A's, who are just as dismal a team as the Rockies. The saving grace for the Rockies is that they have a great stadium experience and people love spending a Colorado afternoon or evening there, so their attendance is much higher than it ought to be.

I'm sure that there will be plenty of cranky male mossbacks who complain about a woman doing the play-by. Screw 'em.

Can’t remember her last name, but the gal on ESPN Jessica Mendoza? She’s right decent, and better than most of the men

Unfortunately I have to agree. But I heard an ESPN radio show last week that picked the Cards to win the Central. I really want some of whatever they were taking.
It tends to be a weaker division and the Cards are usually a good team. It’s kind of a lazy pick… but it makes some sense. I can’t imagine anyone being super confident picking the Reds, Pirates, Brewers, or Cubs to win the NLC either. It’s hard to predict all of these teams, Cards included. (I tend to agree though with the folks expecting St. Louis to be bad this year. I think it will take more time to turn it around for them.)

The SFGiants are going to have it tough. They have upgraded a little in the offseason with Jung Ho Lee in center and hopefully batting lead off. Can he make the transition? Can Jordan Hicks make the transition from closer to starting pitcher? What will Robbie Ray look like when he comes back from Tommy John Surgery? What about Alex Cobb coming back from hip surgery?
Have some promising prospects especially at pitcher, will they pan out? After Logan Webb do they have enough pitching to carry the team until Ray and Cobb come back mid season.
Camino Dovall is developing into a great closer, Logan Webb is a stud, Patrick Bailey has been opening eyes with his performance behind the plate.
Having Bob Melvin at the helm is a good upgrade, no more stating pitchers coming in for one inning. Melvin want to go back to a tradtional approach to starters and relievers and get away from bullpen games. He is also more of a baseball guy and less of a statistics guy than their previous coach. He is also more involved with the players.
The Giants are in the same league with the stinking Dodgers, the Diamondbacks and no one is counting out the Padres. Despite all that I am not ready to count the Giants out. The 2010, 2012 and 2014 seasons made a believer out of me. Of course they had Bruce Bochy at the helm then. :nailbiting:

This is the year the Mariners win the World Series. That's always true until it isn't.

Mariner pitchers and catchers report today. And we are off to the races. Everything else is filler.

You and me, my friend. Rootin' for the M's.

And I'll be in town for the Apple Cup in September, even though a lot of Cougs have their panties in a wad about playing it.

It's going to take a lot for them to contend again. And this past off season they did very little.

Keep me posted on that. Beer on me if we can pull it off. I doubt I'll be at the game, but it would be fun to meet up.

I expect the Mariners to have one of the better pitching staffs in baseball. What I don't expect is a great offense. If Julio catches on fire like he did the second half of his rookie season, France gets back to form, Crawford can keep doing his thing at the top of the order, Raleigh hits for at least a minimally decent average and has his usual power streaks, and the rest of the lineup manages to hit at all, it could be a lot of fun. If the team batting average is .183 like it sometimes seems to be, it's going to be a very low scoring season on offense and defense.

I'm not sure I could talk my wife into going to a Mariners game in addition to other stuff we need to do, but I'll check that schedule too.

The Brewers could finish anywhere in the division this year. Part of it is how young they are, and part of it is the rest of the division is mediocre on paper. We picked up Hoskins, traded Burnes for a couple young players, and signed Chourio to an 8-year deal before he even suited up for the big league club. It should be a fun summer in the Brew City.

Yankees have had Susal Waldman on the radio in a two person broadcast for over a decade.

First, there is no "Susal Waldman" with the Yankees. It's Suzyn.

Second, she is not the lead play-by announcer. Her color/analyst role is secondary.

That is NOT to denigrate her role or her work - the color commentator is a critical role in a professional broadcast. Anyone in that role has to be really good. Full respect to Suzyn!

No, she technically is not play by play. But anyone working with John Sterling does a lot more work than your typical color person.

Yankees seem to have a history with that. Imagine working with Phil Rizzuto? Both of them seem(ed) to view broadcasting a baseball game as an excuse to tell campfire stories for 2-3 hours.

To every broadcast there is a personality. :woot:

I happen to be a Bill Walton fan in watching Pac-12 basketball (which is in its last few games.) I love hearing him repeatedly extol "The Conference of CHAMPIONS!" However, he drives some people nuts with it. I just say it's part of his personal charm.

So long as Roberts is at the helm in L.A., there is hope. For everyone. I expect they’ll fold as usual in the playoffs.
