MLB 2024

The Dodgers are the Dodgers. The rest of the teams aren't. And other free agents aren't Ohtani. It's still going to be expensive to sign free agents, thanks to the Dodgers. Their deal with Ohtani seems really dumb on the surface of it. There may be details and opt-outs I don't know about, but there's no way his arm is going to last very much longer after two Tommy Johns.
They are counting on him to be the Babe. They’ll be happy with to get a few seasons out of him as a pitcher.

M’s trade for Jorge Polanco - Mariners Acquire Jorge Polanco

Nice 2B upgrade for Seattle. Julien kind of stole Polanco’s job last year in Minnesota.

Also the Jays signed Justin Turner to a one-year deal. He had a decent season in Boston last year… but it’s not a very inspiring move. Hopefully he helps, anyways.
JT brings a lot to a clubhouse. I think you’ll like him there.

I'm pretty guarded about the Mariners this season. They should be better than last season if they get any offensive production out of the new lineup. Julio is focused on being far more consistent. He had a monster stretch and then faded at the end. If he hadn't faded, the Mariners could have made the post season and then made some noise like they did in 2022. The starters seem pretty set, barring injury, and they have Hancock waiting to step in in case they do. Maybe they go with a six man rotation to start if he has a good spring. I'm not so sure about the relievers. They are mostly very young, which means they are going to be less consistent. Closer is probably Munoz right now. Just a guess. He is only 25, but he's been up and down in the majors since 2019. So there's that.

As usual, they just can't use up their wins in spring training. That's traditional.

The first few weeks mean nothing. The starters play a few innings at most, and the team gets to look at prospects. But yhe green grass and red clay is nice.

What IS funny is how many of the teams are wearing lasts year's pants. I could tell the Cardinals were doing it in today's game, since the color didn't match the jerseys.

Yeah there’s a pants shortage right now..! I saw an article about that yesterday on The Athletic. Pretty hilarious stuff. I guess it’s good to work out the kinks in spring rather than during the season, but this new uniform roll out has been quite bad so far. Nothing wrong with reusing last year’s pants though. Less wasteful that way. The unis didn’t need changing.

The Mariners have a nice problem, maybe. Ryan Bliss came out of nowhere to hit yesterday. If he keeps it up like yesterday, they will have to find a place for him. He's a utility player, which means they might be able to plug him in at 3rd or one of the outfield spots. He wasn't great in the field yesterday at short. Who cares, JP is already there. And of course, I'm overreacting after one set of at-bats. It's why spring is so much fun.

Speaking of utility guys, the Dodgers finally signed Kike’ to a one year deal. My daughter’s favorite. And a good guy. He’s taking a pay cut, but it’s good to see he’ll be back.

Man, I'd be pissed if I signed with the Dodgers, of all teams, and actually had to take a pay cut. The payroll is already like a billion, what's a little more?:D
