MLB 2024

The White Sox are quite the story. Part of me wishes they hadn’t broke the streak on Tuesday 😂 At least they got back to losing last night.

Their record is currently 28-89 (.239 W-L %). Almost 90 losses this early in August! 🤯

If they keep losing at a similar rate over the remaining 45 games, they could finish 39-123. That’s especially bad.

Chicago is the only bad team with something left to play for. They’re trying not to make history as the worst team ever in MLB.

Atlanta still has time to go on a run! They closed the gap a bit in the division recently. Philly hasn’t been so hot lately. Lots could happen.

I’m impressed to see how close the Padres have made the NL West race. I’d love to see them finally put it all together. They have some great players. They should be a better team than their performance has been the last few seasons.

Vlad Jr. is on a heater right now. 20 game hitting streak. He was 3-4 last night with a double, triple, and home run 🤩 His season slash line is up to .321 / .394 / .551 with 23 home runs. He hits the ball so hard. After some cold stretches and struggles in 2022 and 2023, this is so nice to see. He looks a lot more like the MVP candidate that he was in 2021. And he’s still only 25. He is going to become expensive very soon. Giving a huge contract to a 1B/DH can be risky of course, but they can’t let him walk in free agency.

The Mariners cannot lose today. They cannot win, either, so there's that. I'm feeling a little better about the world after a sweep of the Mets and outscoring the Mets about a zillion to one. The one part is for sure, and the Mariners scored 12 last night. Julio was back as a DH and fanned five times. Ouch. But they won, so it is OK.

On Saturday, Vlad got a hit to extend his streak but the team lost 1-0.

Yesterday, Vlad was hitless—streak over—and they got blown out.

A 2-1 series loss to the stinking Oakland A’s hurts, especially after they managed to win a series against Baltimore before that. C’mon boys. Don’t play down to the competition. (Not like Toronto’s record is that much better, but still..! 🤣)

Next up: Three games at LAA. The Angels stink too but West coast road trips are always treacherous. Here’s hoping for a series win anyway.

An age old rivalry is renewed today when the Blue Jays invade Wrigley Field. When these two teams get together you can throw out the record books - and, this year, you really should. The Cubs are understandably all fired up for this one having pushed Kyle Hendricks scheduled start back so they could get swept in 3 (first time all season) in Cleveland. Basking in that glow of . . . something . . . they had yesterday off and are no doubt ready to go! Fortunately many fans will not be able to view this as it is being carried on Apple TV+. Sadly I'm not among those fans as I sub'd to be able to watch Foundation and Silo (the retitling of which from Wool still frosts me) so this moth will inexorably be drawn to the flame that is the 2024 Cubs season. Working from home and all my afternoon meetings cancelled I'd normally say "beats working" but, honestly, does it? I'm not so certain. It's a beautiful day for a ball game, or lots of other things, but I still need to be near the terminal so can't head up for the game to enjoy one of those $84 bleacher seats (before taxes and fees . . . and there are even taxes ON the fees! 🤯).

I caved and took the two months free AppleTV promo to watch the game this afternoon. I don't love having to use AppleTV to watch a game... but it's honestly a pretty decent broadcast. If I've got AppleTV free for the next two months then I guess I'll watch more of their Friday games.

Jays and Cubs are tied up 2-2 halfway through the 5th. The Jays' first run was gifted to them by the Cubs defence. It was a really weird half inning with multiple bad plays in the field by the Cubs

Yeah, some odd D and even odder calls behind the plate. Think booth analyst nailed it when he suggested umps were keen to finish early and get some grub downtown (Chicago Cut, no doubt). There's a fair breeze out of the WSW so solid hits up in the air will carry, especially to center/center-right.

If you like Sci-Fi and since you have Apple for the moment I'd highly recco their treatments of Asimov's Foundation and Howey's Wool Silo.
