MLB 2024

Huh. Wasn’t expecting this.

The Toronto Blue Jays have traded reliever Nate Pearson to the Chicago Cubs, league sources confirmed. In exchange, the Cubs sent a pair of minor-leaguers to Toronto in shortstop Josh Rivera and left fielder Yohendrick Pinango.

Pearson was a highly rated starting pitcher prospect at one time. That’s years ago now. He’s struggled to stay healthy, and when healthy he generally hasn’t performed. He’s a reliever now and doing okay in that role. Used to throw gas but now mainly relies on sliders. Really not how anybody expected him to develop! In any case, I hope Nate finds success in Chicago. The potential has always been there.

Toronto’s sell off continues! Best of luck to Danny Bats in Boston. Unfortunately he’s the enemy now 🫤

Jansen got into the action right away yesterday in Boston, only a day after the trade. He went 2-3.

Toronto managed to sweep Texas over the weekend. Scores were 6-5, 7-3, 7-3. Very solid starts from Gausman on Saturday (complete game!) and Berrios yesterday (7 innings). I could get used to this! Unfortunately, they're now off on a road trip for 4 games in Baltimore and 3 in New York. W's are going to be harder to earn against these teams.

Oof. Watching SportsCenter last night saw the play of Elly De La Cruz for the Reds against the Rays. Elly made a circus catch to extend his starter's no hit bid that was deserving of Top 10 by itself but . . . he also went 3 for 4 and . . . stole FOUR bases. Yet the Reds lost 2-1. Damn, what a wasted effort. He's one of those guys that make you watch other teams games just to watch him play.

Now will his team be moping after a wasted opportunity or fired up when they host my bottom of the barrel Cubs tonight? And how will the Cubs respond to losing the popular Christopher Morel but gaining an AS 3rd baseman (weather permitting)?

As a result of a good natured bet/promise based upon Mallory Swanson having scored 3 goals in the 1st 2 games for the US women's Olympic soccer team Cubs manager Craig Counsell will be submitting tonight's scorecard with "Mallory Swanson's husband" in the space for 3B Dansby Swanson. Nice touch.

In a related but non-MLB story Chicago Bears safety Jonathon Owens is in Paris, and not training camp, to cheer on HIS wife Simone Biles . . . with full approval from Bears management.

The Jays and M’s are once again conducting biz!

Traded for Shrek 🤣 🤣 🤣

Turner started the season as the Jays’ best hitter, partly because other guys were slumping, but also because Turner was legit playing well. He was really on a heater in April and into May. Then he cooled off a while. In recent weeks he’s hitting much better again. I hope he keeps it up in Seattle. He’s a genuinely likable player and Jays fans will no doubt miss him even though he wasn’t in Toronto very long.

Lots of moves today. Pham spent five seasons with the Cards and is a nice addition. Fedde is a new name to me but he's quite good.

That’s an interesting one! Edman is a nice get for L.A. He’s not a game-changer, but at least a useful player. Kopech seems like more of a lottery ticket. Maybe the Dodgers can help him to achieve more of his potential. I didn’t realize he was closing games this season. It’s his first year pitching out of the bullpen exclusively. The numbers aren’t great… but really how many save opportunities is a guy going to get on this White Sox team 🤣 They’re dreadful.

I’d never heard of Fedde before. His numbers in Chicago this year are quite solid. Nice addition to the Cards’ rotation.

The Barves got Soler again:

The Mariners are buying and buying hard for once. The good thing is that they aren't decimating their farm system too much while doing it, either. I'm not sure what to think about what happened last night, though. Well, aside from trying to think about it as little as possible. Hey, they scored seven runs! They gave up 14. Oof.

Excellent! Kikuchi will slump in the second half and sink the Astros if he's true to form.
I'll be cheering for Yusei 😤

Lots of deals going down today, hard to keep track of it all! I'm just getting caught up. now on MLBTR.

Toronto moved a couple more guys: Kiermaier to the Dodgers; Kiner-Falefa to the Pirates; Trevor Richards to the Twins. No clue about any of the returns in these deals. Can't imagine they got much back for any of these guys. But salute 🫡 to all these now former Jays. Kiermaier was an evil Tampa Bay Ray all those years, but he won over Jays fans since he came to Toronto. Very possibly the best defensive CF of his generation of players. He's incredible in the field. IKF was seen as a 'nothing' signing last winter but proved to be a very good player during his brief time in Toronto this summer. Too bad he's been hurt recently; they could have really used his bat. And Richards has been so reliable out of the 'pen the last few seasons. I will miss them all. And Kikuchi. And Turner. And Danny Jansen. Damn. This trade deadline hurts. I am sad now 😢
