MLB 2024

SFGiants fan here, guess who I am rooting fore. Want another hint, I would rood for a dead dog before I would root for the dodgers. Go Yankees!
Oh My Goodness...This is a side of you that I've never seen before, mr. slobake!
Go (To H***), Yankees!
(jk...just having some NoCal/SoCal Fun.)
Thanks!

Could be a holdover from the early to mid 70's. The Giants were pretty bad and the Dodgers were doing well. If the Giants were playing the Dodgers at Candlestick there would be way more Dodgers fans that Giants fans. Was drowned out trying to cheer on my home team in San Francisco. No love lost for Dodgers fans.
I talk tough but it is entertainment and not a life and death matter. I have a grudging respect for the Dodgers teams but I still hate em! Go Yankees!

I would typically default to cheering for the AL team in the World Series... but it's the Yankees 🤮 Can't do it. Though honestly this iteration of the Yankees is pretty likeable. I wouldn't mind seeing Judge, Soto, and Zombie Stanton win a World Series. If they had just one noteworthy former Blue Jay then I could stomach cheering for the pinstripes. Alas, they do not. So I am cheering for the Dodgers all the way! They have some very likeable players too, along with former Jay Teoscar Hernandez.

The WS could be a slugfest if the bats show up for both sides. Here are some regular season offensive rankings:
  • NYY 1st in AL for HR (237); LAD 1st in NL for HR (233)
  • NYY 1st in AL for OPS (.761) and 2nd in AL for SLG (.429); LAD 1st in NL for OPS (.781) and 1st in NL for SLG (.446)
  • NYY 1st in AL for runs (815) and 4th in AL for hits (1352); LAD 2nd in NL for runs (842) and 3rd in NL for hits (1423)

Neither team's true strength is pitching, but I probably like NYY's pitching situation a bit better at the moment. LA has just had so many injuries. Dodgers need to score enough that their pitchers don't need to try to be perfect.

I don't like either glitzy, big bucks team. This year's World Series is dead to me. It just needs to be over so the Mariners can be undefeated and in first again for a few months. 2025 is the year. I just know it.

It has been 43 years since the Yanks and Dodgers have faced off in a WS. I was lucky enough to attend one of the games at Dodger Stadium back then. This time I will be watching from the comfort of my home on a big screen. That said, MLB must be very happy as it brings the two largest markets to the TV screens. At the end of the day, MLB is an entertainment business and designed to create revenue.

Well, I guess this is the World Series America wanted. I'm sure the ratings will be better than average for this one. Entering the post season, I was really rooting for a Cleveland - Milwaukee Series. Two small market, blue collar teams. Oh well, maybe someday.
Yeah, this frees up my TV time to watch anything but the series.

The Mets are the first team to beat the Brewers in the playoffs and not at least make it to the World Series.

81 Yankees, lost to Dodgers in WS
82 Cardinals, beat the Brewers in WS
08 Phillies, beat the Rays in WS
11 Cardinals, beat the Rangers in WS
18 Dodgers, lost to Red Sox in WS
19 Nationals, beat the Astros in WS
20 Dodgers, beat the Rays in WS
21 Braves, beat the Astros in WS
23 Diamondbacks, lost to the Rangers in WS
24 Mets, lost to Dodgers in NLCS

At least we've lost to teams that do well. Six of the ten went on to win it all.

OK, time for the new thread for the upcoming season. Congratulations to Texas and all that. But that was a while ago. I'm slacking.

I'm optimistic about the Mariners' pitching staff, provided they don't get wiped out by injuries or bone headed GM moves. So far, the bone headed GM moves haven't been so bone headed these days. Some worked out, some didn't. What they really need is to make contact when they are up to bat. A couple of high average bats would make the Mariners formidable. They have JP Crawford back, and he's really rounding into a just under the radar beast. Julio will be back indefinitely, and I don't see him doing much besides get even better with time, injury notwithstanding. The rest of the lineup isn't perfect, but it has promise.

On to the hot stove league.
Well the Pirate are making major strides towards a championship next year by firing the director of Latin American operations, while the worst GM and manager combo in the history of the franchise remain.

RIP Fernando. A true one-of-a-kind legend. Nobody had a delivery like him.
He certainly energized much of the existing fanbase and brought in many new fans to baseball. He was great in the best tradition of baseball in that he was one of those players that was just fun to watch play; people circled their calendars (as one did back then before iWatches and uPhones) for the games he was scheduled to start.

Not to mention the legion of FA's beating down the doors to enter into incentive-based contracts knowing there's a great chance that management will weasel out of those incentives by honoring the letter but never the spirit of the contract to save a few cents. Happy Days are Here Again . . .

Amen bro. You’re preaching to the choir. Face it MLB with no salary cap is a joke. If the Dodgers can allocate a billion dollars on two pitchers, what chance does a team whose owner would rather give up a leg than fielding a whole team for more than $65 million a year. If there any doubt why the Dodgers and Yankees are in the World Series, just look at their payroll.

The truth is in order sports to be compelling there has to be competition of reasonably equal talents. Some how I can’t get excited when a power house comes to town for a 3 game series, and everybody know who going to win game one and two, including the players as well as the coaching (thank you analytics) and play like crap. Game three the powerhouse rests as many front line players as they can, and the home team wins game three. At that rate Powerhouse is on pace for just short of 100 games enough to get a spot in the playoffs. A couple of extra wins at the expense of the Pirates or a team of their ilk, and they may get home field advantage.

I truly love the game of baseball. I loved every minute I played it. I loved watching it or even just listening to it on the radio, until about 1994. That is when I started to understand why only certain team were competitive year in and year out. If was obvious then and it’s been unwatchable since.
