Mod appreciation thread

Well, I just read through the JimmyM thread and saw a few people suggest a mod appreciation thread. Didn't see one (barring a few ones about John Turner), so I figured I'd start it.

I've been lurking here since '08, signed up for supporting recently. Definitely worth renewing here. Everytime I searched Google for something bass-related this site would pop up. The information here is deep and expansive. That is not why I decided to support though.

I say this site is worth supporting because of the atmosphere above all. I've lurked many forums, and none have the level of civility that exists here. It's not just the site rules, most forums have a similar ruleset. It's the enforcement of them. The mods here pay attention to what goes on and keep things in line. It's not all silent, behind the scenes action, either. They warn people when a thread gets close to the edge, and if a post gets edited for content, there is often a reason stated.

But it's not just toe-the-line overdone polite here. There's humor, some of which even gets close to the line. People can poke fun at eachother in jest. People can do that with the mods, who post frequently with advice and other comments in addition to watching the forums. Some of them even poke fun at themselves.

It is this combination of real involvement, good moderation and a certain level of not taking themselves too seriously that makes the mods here, and the forum at large, really work. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate it. :)

Of course, this is just my story here. Post yours too, why do you appreciate the mods?

I think they do a pretty good job. I recently got a warning from one, he didn't ban me and I do disagree with him that what I did was out of line. But the way he handled it was appreciated. I do think there are far worst things on here then what I did but this is not my site and I am not a mod.

I gotta say that my interactions with the mods has been great. I've got "the PM" a few times and can only say that it was done professionally and me being loquacious I would send a return PM. They always returned them and with great humor and understanding. What more could you ask for from a regulating entity?

I walk a thin line sometimes and perception can be a tricky thing. If they ere on the side of cautious, I can live with that. After all, it is a family forum.

The thread derails and closures are some of my favorite things here :) There are a couple Mods with "the gift".

I learned sexist comments about lesbians and our girlfriends is ok, just don't post a picture of a "rocket" cake that may our may not look like a penis. lol.

+1 I totally agree. The line between acceptable and non acceptable is really thin. What we see as fairly normal, may be quite offending in other parts of the world. So it's good to have some really cool mods, who do understand that we sometimes may be posting a little over excited.

I appreciate the mods :)

I really do. It may seem self-congratulatory, but I was a regular, active member here for over seven years before I became a mod. I always appreciated all the work they did, and knew that everything they did was for the greater good of the whole community. The good of the whole always comes before the wants of a few here, which is why there are so many rules. This doesn't jive with a lot of folks with egos, but it just plain works, and you can see how well it works when you visit other forums. There are very few that I'd put anywhere near the level of civility, organization, and knowledge that this place has. While the members themselves are a large part of that, the way TB is run is what makes it works. There are knowledgeable guys on every forum. There are big personalities on every forum. That's not enough to keep me wanting to go back to a place over and over again. If someone feels so desperately repressed because they can't call someone a douchebag here, then there are plenty of other places online they can do that. YouTube comments and playgrounds provide ample opportunity for those whose level of commentary isn't above insulting others or feeling the need to defend themselves by slinging their own insults. TalkBass has never been that place and never will be, thank goodness.

Once I became a mod myself, I appreciated it even more- there's a lot of work that goes into it both in front of and behind the scenes, and it can be a thankless task. We even take on a good amount of insults and even threats, which is something most don't know about. The best is when someone breaks a clearly spelled-out rule, and when getting called out for it, claim the mod is doing it just to bolster his ego or flex his e-muscles :p We've all got jobs, families, and at least half the mods are parents. I've been changing diapers nearly every day for 8 1/2 years straight now- I'm way too tired to get a rush out of sending out an infraction for swearing :D All of them do it because they care about the site and the community within. I've met a ton (100+) TBers in real life at this point, and pretty much every one has been a great person. I love TB and would come here whether I was a mod or not, and it would actually be easier on me and give me more time to browse as a "regular" user if I wasn't one, but being able to contribute a bit to maintaining a good atmosphere for those people to interact on makes it worth the work.

I'd like to say thanks myself to all the mods as I know what ya'll deal with, and because it makes my own personal TB experience better.

Oh, and sorry to anyone who apologized by PM after receiving a reminder/infraction if I didn't reply back. We all get a bunch of PMs every day, and I either run out of time or just plain forget to reply to all of them. The apologies are appreciated.
