the author misused "altered" instead of "augmented"...

i take that back, the author just used "altered" as a blanket term for a whole bunch of stuff instead of the soecifics. frustrating as a potentially misleading educational document...

I know you were agreeing with me, but...just checking what the melody notes are isn't enough. That's kind of the point of this thread: the same notes that are used in the G major scale are in the E (natural) minor scale, D mixolydian scale, C lydian, etc., so just matching the notes from the sheet music to a scale isn't going to tell you the mode used in the song.

This is really the key point (no pun intended, har har). This makes it click for me. You gotta use your ear. Where does the song want to resolve to?

I am tired of that never-ending samo-samo blah-blah about modes.

theres plenty of resources out there by more talented educators than me, i agree that there are too many people saying too many things. if people would just pick up a book or do a google search instead of asking a forum, they might get more satisfactory answers, anyways
