Modified Squier Affinity Jazz Bass V

This is a cross post but people who visit this thread may be interested in seeing it.

I got this Affinity from my local GC for dirt cheap. It played really nice but I wanted to add a little extra oomph.

I changed the strings, changed the pickguard, added some chrome, got a setup and splurged on a J-Retro pre.

Now I have a really, REALLY nice backup to my Peavey Cirrus. This won't be my main player but for times when ...

1) I need something to play if/when my Cirrus is unavailable (Repairs, etc.) or,
2) I absolutely, positively HAVE to have a Jazz Bass. (We all know that sometimes only a J-Bass will do!)

... this bass will definitely fit the bill and it does so for less than $400. That works for me!

This bass looks incredible! Were you able to find a direct fit pickguard? Or did you have to mod it?

How do you like the J Retro pre with the stock pickups?

Great job!

Pair of MM's! I bet that sounded huge!!!

Lol.

The first one I had, put Duncan 67/70 pickups in it, MIM black abalone pickguard and a Bad Ass V bridge. I wish I still had that one, and honestly I have no frickin idea why I sold it...probably because of TB GAS...

The next one I put in a pair of MM style pickups and a 2 band pre, series/parallel/single coil settings, too. I routed the body with a Dremel.

Thanks a lot! I really love those SX's. Please let me know when you finish it. I would love to hear the results!

hi young man, I listened to your playing and tone(flawless). I have the Affinity jazz v also(black). Thought I wanted to mod it but couldnt. On youtube checkout(11coopbass) he's modded some $100 basses that sound just as good or better than a lot of hi-end basses, I believe the total of his mods were about $50. I'm currently waiting for the parts(Preamps-sheilding tape football i/p jacks) to mod a few of my sx basses (I lived 5 miles from rondo when they were in nj) so I ended up buying quite a few of them after hearing the tones from 11coopbass' sx mods i am going to give it a try ($15 3band preamp $3 football jack $4 sheilding tape). As for your tone from youtube its a tone I can live with and be happy with. You did good "Grasshopper". Peace

I had a chance to A/B it with a MIM Jazz 5 and this bass (stock) had much more personality than the MIM. To be honest, my original plan was to indeed get a MIM.

I tour a lot as well, so we're both in the same boat. I wanted a bass for those weird flights where they absolutely will not allow you to place the bass on the plane. If something goes wrong, it can be very easily replaced!

Very nice chops. I also own an Affinity Jazz 5 which I paid $229.00 for brand new. I replaced the bridge w/a Hipshot and put some very nice Dogal Jaco flats on it & it smokes. I was going to replace the pups with something exotic, but I found I really loved the tone I was getting. I love it MUCH more than the tone from the stock Fender pups on my MIM Jazz 5 (which I replaced w/Barts). I take it on tour sometimes when we're going somewhere it might get stolen out of a parked van or whatever,,,,,Europe mostly. It's all white which photos nicely on a big stage (sunburst is better in a nightclub) & if it gets stolen.....another $300 & we're good.

Thanks! :hyper:

The pickguard is from a regular MIM Fender 5-string. It was a perfect fit except for a 1/8' gap at the base of the neck. As you can see, that gap is virtually invisible.

The J-Retro was also a perfect drop-in and I love the tone. The pickups really are not bad and they work well with the preamp. They have a bit of a raw edge that make for a perfect complement to my more refined Cirrus.

My next project is going to be putting the new u.s. deluxe pickups(n3) and electronics ($300 on ebay) into a squire (if I can find another one that plays like my backup !) A very good upgrade for anyone thinking of doing some hotrodding.

Sorry if this a threadjack, but has anyone found a drop-in replacement bridge for the Affinity V?

I have one with Fralin pickups that is really impressive. The bridge is the weakest part of the bass, so if there is an easy replacement, I might do it.

I vaguely remember someone saying a Fender deluxe bridge would work, but you would have to use the String-thru holes??

I found a thread earlier this week where someone mentioned that the ground wire can lift up opart of the standard bridges(where the g string sits) on all fenders and by adjusting the wire it can lay perfectly flat and eliminated the need for a replacement in alot of cases. Alot of people swap bridges because of a weak sounding g string. It appears that this may be the culprit. My affinitys' bridge seems like it may lower quality than a standard, though. Anyone know what type of metal is used on the bridges for affinity basses ?

Any progress on this? Thinking it would be a cool thing, although I'm curious about how the Fender setup compares to the EMG-JVX set.

I haven't seen a Deluxe assembly come up on Ebay aside from last year. I should've jumped on it then. I did get CS Vintage 60's pups for her. It made a nice improvement.
