Lately I've found it much easier when practicing alone to get into my playing and be more creative by changing my tone. A good sound is inspiring to me and it really helps me get into what I'm doing. I like to play stuff that's sometimes on the faster & heavier side and so I've distorted my bass using an EHX Graphic Fuzz pedal, which I bought for the EQ, which would allow me to keep my low end. It's a pretty great pedal. Just curious as to what others on here like to use for their style of playing.
