Modulus hollow body...

Guys,

This is my last modulus thread, i promise. I need to stop talking about getting one, and just do it.. so i think i am. I just want to know what you think about the semi hollow bodied ones? Brian at the lowend has one that I'm going to buy. I just want to know what you guys think of the hollow body ones. Also he said he would put whatever pickups i want in it. I've opted for the barts, but any input on pickup selection will be highly apreciated? Thanks so much, i need to just get the damn bass, and never get on the internet again.

didnt Oteil use a Hollow Body one for ages?

and Steve Lawson has a Hollow fretless one.

man the only pickups im gonna recomend at the Moment are gonna be some Nordies, but i have heard a few Modulus's with Barts and they always sounded great.

I've got two semi hollow Modulus 6s - a fretless, with a lined Granadillo fingerboard, and a fretted with a one-of-a-kind carved top and chechen board. the fretless has Lane Poors in, and the fretted has Barts - I much prefer the Lane Poors, but sadly they no longer exist. I love the tone of my Fretted 6, but I would like to swap out the pickups at some point - probably for Nordstrands.

Both the Basses have East UK U-Retro preamps, which are fantastic, and replaced a Bart in the fretless and an Aguilar in the fretted. Much prefer the U-Retros in both of them - Invalid Link Removed

those 25th Anniversary basses are lovely - I played on at NAMM last year, very nice indeed.

Funny you mention the swap for Nordstrands. I was thinking that same thing along with an Aguilar OBP-3. I've owned that combination in the past and love it.

Even though the Barts sound great, I think I like them a lot better in my Legacy Elite 6 with the Mahogany body. I hoping the Nordies might 'woody' or warm up the tone a little in the Modulus.

U-Retros, eh? I have no experience with them. Can you provide a compare versus the OBP-3?

HI AJ,

The U-Retro just strikes me as a really player-friendly design - the frequencies at which it works (the treble control rolls off at a different frequency to where it boosts, so you get a roll off closer to a passive tone control, but a boost at a higher more sparkly frequency) - the sweepable midrange has a really wide range, and a useable Q, and the bass is boost only, and again, the frequency seems to be perfect for me. It's also got a bright switch, which makes the bass sound like it's got a piezo in it - just adds sparkle.

My Retros are both modified to give me a passive pan control, so that the pan works in passive mode as well - the standard version has an active buffered pan control and the a pickup switch for passive mode (between both and just the rear pickup.)

have a look at the site for more detailed info. The preamp just seems to fit these basses so well.

OK, I think I will jump into this thread. :D I bought the semi-hollow Quantum in the classified section of this website and it will arrive here next week.

I am anticipating that this will be a really great bass based on what I am reading here. I was looking for something lightweight, 5 string, with a 2 octave neck, dual humbuckers, dots on the neck, 17mm string spacing, and to NOT sound like a Fender. This particular Modulus fit the bill completely. I have added a lot of chordal ideas to my playing and I needed easy access to the high notes for solos over standards and some original tunes I have written.

I took a chance buying it without playing it, but I have always liked the sound of a Modulus so I couldn't resist it.
