Modulus Mob

Name is kinda corny, but hey, it's not THAT bad is it?? :D

My 1994 Q5 in flame green comes in tomorrow. I'm pretty damn psyched!!

Still not as bad as "Modulust" which to this day remains my eBay ID. Was into the Modulus basses big time at the time and thought it was pretty cool. Since then I have moved on to Alembic but for somereason never changed the eBay ID.

I took delivery of my new Q5 in April '07. I ordered it through Bass Northwest in Seattle - great guys, I highly recommend them.
It's got a burl Mytle top. I asked for something different - and it is - when you look at it upside-down in person, it looks like the head of an alien with huge eyes and a sort of elephant trunk, or octopus arm, people see different things, but usually the alien head.

I have a question for you Modulus owners, and I'll look for other threads to ask as well.
I got the Bartolini 3-band system. I would like to hear opinions on the Barts vs. the EMG pickups. If there is a thread about this, could someone point me to it?

Thanks,
LP75

Killer bass man, that's a truly nice nice top!

To answer your question, on my fretted Q's, I like the more "subdued" and low-mid emphasis of the Barts. Both of my fretted Q5's are setup Barts/Bart 3-band.
My custom Q5 to be done this winter will have Barts/Aggy 3-band.
To be honest, I prefer the Barts on fretteds, and EMGs on fretlesses. They just pick up the notes better a little, IME.
My fretless Q5 has a Lane Poor in the neck and EMG in the bridge. It's a nice combo of the two.

Jazzbo58 - I love the different hues and figures of the myrtle tops. Yours is beautiful - I saw it earlier in this thread. BNW has another Q5 myrtle for sale right now!

Rockstarbassist - thanks for the input. There are things I like about the Barts in my Q5, yet I would like to hear it with the EMG's for comparison. So far everyone that's heard mine has made very positive remarks about it. My main drummer loves it. I love it too, but I keep wondering how I would like the EMGs.

Guess I will need to save up some $$$$ to get one with the EMGs!

Rockstarbassist - You seem to have owned multiple Modulii - and I would like to know someting else, that I would imagine has been discussed around here before this.

I want nothing more than a neck-through or TBX 5-srting. How rarely do you find the opportunity to get one?

My ear agrees with this. I have a Q6 fretless, and I carefully auditioned EMGs and Barts before ordering. The EMGs won hands down. With frets, I call it a toss-up. Personally, I'd probably go with the EMGs also, with the phenolic fingerboard. Barts with the Chechen.

Haha, yeah I try to keep my stable up in good standing. I love Quantums, all-time fave bass, so they're what I'm sticking with right now!

Finding a TBX 4, 5 or 6 is TOUGH, let alone affordable. Most people who have them know their value, and even if they wanted to let them go, they ask a lot.
A forumite here has an incredible TBX 6 that I would have bought had I just not of ordered my custom Q5 about 2 weeks prior.

But they're apparently the "It" Quantums if you can find one in good shape. I don't know exactly how many were made over how many years, but I don't even think they'd make you one anymore, no matter the cost (reasonably, of course).
If you find one and have the scratch, snatch it up as it's only going to appreciate over time. Plus, it's gonna end up being your main ax! ;)

I want in! How do I get a Modulus Mob number?

After many years of GAS I finally got a Quantum and love it!

Killer axes guys, especially that last one!

My custom Q5 will be similar to that one, as I'm getting a velvet blue over red finish, with a quilted maple top and chechen fingerboard option as well as a few preamp change ups.

Anyone who wants a number be sure to PM me and I'll get you hooked up!
